The return to sports following a shoulder SLAP injury: case report

Abstract:

The SLAP lesions are the most frequent injuries in overhead sports, i.e. in sports that require athletic gestures that involve repeated movements of the upper limb above the head, such as throwing or hitting a ball (handball, baseball, tennis, water polo, etc.). These lesions affect the glenoid labrum and cause shoulder pain and a substantial loss of strength in the upper limb. SLAPs are classified according to the portion of the glenoid labrum affected and depending on their severity they can be treated conservatively or surgically and often pharmacological treatment is also integrated. In association with these treatments, it is essential to face a physiotherapy path to obtain the best possible functional recovery. Within this report, a clinical case of a patient, a baseball player, operated on for type II SLAP lesion will be described. The goal of the thesis will be to give guidelines on prevention and subsequently on post-operative rehabilitation.

Abstract:

Le SLAP lesion sono le lesioni pi? frequenti negli sport overhead, cio? negli sport che richiedono gesti atletici che comportano movimenti ripetuti dell'arto superiore al di sopra della testa, come ad esempio tirare, lanciare o schiacciare una palla (pallamano, baseball, tennis, pallanuoto, ecc.). Queste lesioni interessano il cercine glenoideo e causano dolore alla spalla e una sostanziale perdita di forza dell'arto superiore. Le SLAP vengono classificate a seconda della porzione del labbro glenoideo colpito e a seconda della loro gravit? possono essere trattate conservativamente o chirurgicamente e spesso viene integrato anche un trattamento farmacologico. In associazione a questi trattamenti ? fondamentale affrontare un percorso fisioterapico per ottenere il miglior recupero funzionale possibile. All'interno di questo elaborato sar? descritto un caso clinico di un paziente, giocatore di baseball, operato di SLAP lesion di tipo II. L'obbiettivo della tesi sar? quello di dare delle linee guida sulla prevenzione e successivamente sulla riabilitazione post operatoria.
