Keep Your Mouth Open: Dental Oral Health of Hutterites Buried in Přibice

Abstract:

Práce se zaměřuje na zkoumání distribuce zubních paleopatologií u novokřtěnské populace z Přibic v České republice. Výzkum řeší zdravotní stav ústní dutiny 41 jedinců vykopávaných z hrobů H98 – H130 spolu s jejich příměsí. V teoretické části práce poskytuje stručný přehled historie hutteritů a seznamuje čtenáře se základními principy dentální antropologie. Praktická část studie zahrnuje analýzu dentálních paleopatologií přítomných u zkoumaných jedinců. Výsledky ukazují, že dospělí jedinci vykazovali výrazně vyšší prevalenci různých typů dentálních paleopatologií ve srovnání s nedospělými jedinci. To naznačuje, že dospělí lidé byli během svého života více zatíženi problémy s ústním zdravím. Pro získání širšího pohledu jsou výsledky porovnány s dalšími populacemi z novověku z území České republiky. Tato srovnávací analýza pomáhá dát do kontextu zdravotní stav chrupu jihomoravských huteritů z 16.-17. století n. l. a poskytuje náhled na možné podobnosti či rozdíly s jinými populacemi v regionu v tomto časovém období.

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on examining the distribution of dental paleopathologies among a modern era Hutterite population from Přibice, Czech Republic. The research investigates the oral health conditions of 41 individuals excavated from graves H98 - H130, along with their admixtures. In the theoretical part, the thesis provides a brief overview of the history of the Hutterites and introduces the basic principles of dental anthropology. The practical part of the study involves analysing the dental paleopathologies present in the examined individuals. The results indicate that adult individuals exhibited a significantly higher prevalence of various types of dental paleopathologies compared to subadult individuals. This suggests that adults experienced a greater burden of oral health issues during their lifetime. To gain a broader perspective, the findings are compared with other modern era populations from the Czech Republic territory. This comparative analysis helps to contextualize the dental health status of the South Moravian Hutterites from the 16th-17th century AD and provides insights into potential similarities or differences with other populations in the region during that time period.
