Male role, self-esteem and depression in men

Abstract:

Práce je věnována tématu mužské role, self-esteem a depresivity u mužů. Nejprve seznamuje se zkoumanou problematikou, ve které jsou vysvětleny základní pojmy s orientací na období adolescence. Navíc uvádí vzájemné vztahy mezi zkoumanými jevy dle dostupných zahraničních výzkumů. K získání údajů o tom, jak spolu souvisí vnímání mužské role, self-esteem a depresivita u mužů byly použity tři dotazníky: Rosenbergova škála sebehodnocení (RSES); Zdravotní dotazník (PHQ-9); Dotazník konfliktu genderových rolí (GRCS). Výsledky dotazníkových šetření prokazují, že rigidní požadavky spojené s tradiční mužskou rolí souvisejí s nižší úrovní self-esteem a s vyšší mírou depresivity a to u chlapců ve věkovém rozmezí 15?22 let.

Abstract:

This paper examines male gender role, self-esteem, and depression in men. At first, the above mentioned topics are dealt with and relevant basic concepts are explained, with an emphasis on the period of adolescence. Moreover, the relations among the aforesaid phenomena are described according to the foreign journal articles available to the author. Three research methods were used to explore the relations among male gender role perception, self-esteem, and depression in men: Rosenberg?s Self-esteem Scale (RSES), Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), and Gender Role Conflict Scale (GRCS). The results suggest that rigid demands associated with a traditional male gender role are related to lower self-esteem and higher depression in boys aged 15?22 years.
