Tibetan Buddhism in the Jesuit perspective of the early 18th century: Comparation of the reports of Manoel Freyre and Ippolito Desideri

Abstract:

Cílem mnou předkládané bakalářské práce je srovnání dvou zpráv o tibetském buddhismu a Tibetu z první poloviny 18. století z per jezuitských misionářů Manoela Freyreho a Ippolita Desideriho. Práce směřuje k nalezení možných příčin jejich odlišného vyznění a zaměřuje se na analýzu a interpretaci rozdílných postojů obou misionářů k pozorované tibetské tradici, jejíž jednotlivé prvky budou určeny na základě kratší z obou zpráv, tedy té z pera Manoela Freyreho. Tyto výpovědi jsou pak analyzovány ve dvou rovinách. První rovinu tvoří možné vlivy žánru na formulaci jednotlivých výpovědí, kde teoretickou oporou je především práce Ines G. Županovové. Výzkumnou otázkou zde je především to, nakolik je struktura a obsah zpráv předurčen, nebo vůbec ovlivněn předepsanými formáty jezuitské misionářské korespondence. Na druhé rovině je pak sledován politický a osobní kontext, v němž oba misionáři pracovali. Zde jde zejména o otázku vztahu obou misionářů ke konkurenční kapucínské misii v Tibetu. Na rovině osobní potom půjde o otázku zájmu na pokračování vlastní misie a v inspirativní návaznosti na T. Todorova na zvážení různých rovin vztahu k "jinému" (znát/neznat, mít rád/nemít rád).

Abstract:

The aim of my bachelor thesis is to compare two reports on Tibetan Buddhism and Tibet from the first half of the 18th century by Jesuit missionaries Manoel Freyre and Ippolito Desideri. The work aims to find possible causes of their different tone and focuses on the analysis and interpretation of the different attitudes of both missionaries to the observed Tibetan tradition, whose individual elements will be determined on the basis of the shorter of both reports, from pen of Manoel Freyre. These statements are then analyzed on two levels. The first level consists of possible influences of the genre on the formulation of individual statements, where the theoretical support is mainly the work of Ines G. Županov. The research question here is primarily to what extent the structure and content of the reports is predetermined or at all influenced by the prescribed formats of Jesuit missionary correspondence. On the second level, the political and personal context in which both missionaries worked was followed. This is in particular about the relationship between the two missionaries and the competing Capuchin mission in Tibet. On a personal level, then, it will be a question of interest in the continuation of one's own mission and, in inspiration to T. Todorov, to consider the different levels of relationship to the "other" (knowing / not knowing, liking / disliking).
