The Suits Series in Dubbing and Subtitles: Mediating Cultures in AVT

Abstract:

The main objective of this master thesis is to analyse and identify the translation strategies employed to translate culture-specific elements and legal terminology in the Czech dubbing and subtitles of the American TV series Suits. The analysis is performed based on a corpus composed of transcripts of two selected episodes and examines how the limitations of dubbing and subtitling formats affect the final translation. The results reveal that the translations differ significantly in several aspects, which could be attributed to the time gap between the realisations of each translation rather than the media-specific limitations.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce si klade za cíl analýzu a identifikaci překladatelských strategií použitých pro převod kulturně specifických prvků a právnického jazyka v českých překladech dabingu a titulků amerického seriálu Kravaťáci. Analýza je provedena na základě korpusu složeného z přepisů dialogů dvou vybraných dílů a zkoumá, jaký vliv mají omezení typická pro formát dabingu a titulků na výsledný překlad. Výsledky odhalují, že se překlady v několika kritériích výrazně liší, což není natolik ovlivněno rozdílným formátem, ale spíše časovým odstupem mezi realizacemi jednotlivých překladů.
