Prospective Translators In The Making: Competencies Reflected In Their Texts And Implications For Translation Training

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the competencies of prospective future translators as reflected in their texts. The aim of this diploma thesis is to explore the language and intercultural skills of senior high-school students through the means of students' translations of literary and non-literary text from English to Czech. The subsequent aim of the thesis is to find what competencies students lack and suggest the implications for translation training. The author of the thesis proposes a hypothesis that student translators translate literally, word-for-word. The theoretical part of the work outlines the translation process, translation methods and strategies and the means of evaluating translation. The analysis of the students' translations is threefold: it includes a comparative analysis of the source-text and the target-text following the approach of Christiane Nord, and an analysis of the translations according to error categorization. The last part of the analysis includes a survey of the students' translation processes. The conclusion brings together the results of the analyses, proving the hypothesis that students translate literally. It is further shown that the students were able to transfer the function and the purpose of the text, yet there was room for improvement in terms of the students' command of written Czech, despite it being their native tongue. The intercultural knowledge of the students was, however, adequate, and the survey reveals that they are interested in developing their cultural knowledge of English-speaking countries: a competency that is, in fact, underrepresented in English classes. Additionally, it is recommended that translation training should focus on a more complex evaluation of students' translation and should integrate evaluation based on error framework within classes.

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá projevem kompetencí potenciálních budoucích překladatelů v jejich překladech. Práce má za cíl prozkoumat jazykové a interkulturní znalosti žáků posledního ročníku střední školy prostřednictvím překladů literárního a neliterárního textu z anglického do českého jazyka. Dále se výzkum snaží zjistit, jaké mají studenti nedostatky, a navrhnout případné změny ve výuce překladu. Autorka v práci formuluje hypotézu, že studenti, kteří s překladem teprve začínají, překládají doslovně. V teoretické části práce je popsán překladatelský proces, překladatelské metody a strategie a způsoby hodnocení překladu. Praktická část se skládá z třívrstvé analýzy studentských překladů. Tato analýza zahrnuje srovnávací analýzu výchozího a cílového textu podle Christiany Nordové a analýzu 52 překladů prostřednictvím kategorizace chyb. Poslední část analýzy tvoří dotazníkové šetření o překladatelském procesu studentů. Závěr práce shrnuje výsledky analýz a potvrzuje hypotézu, že studenti překládají doslovně. Dále se ukazuje, že studenti byli schopni při překladu obou textů zohlednit jejich funkci a účel, nicméně měli potíže se zvládnutím cílového jazyka, a to i přesto, že je to jejich mateřský jazyk. Interkulturní znalosti studentů byly však solidní, a dotazník navíc ukázal, že studenti mají o kulturní znalosti z oblasti anglicky mluvících zemí zájem a ve výuce anglického jazyka jim chybí. Výuka překladu by se měla zaměřit na zevrubnější hodnocení studentských překladů a začlenit do něj evaluaci na základě kategorizace chyb.
