The Pernicious Beauty in Myths of Antique Age

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce „Zhoubná krása ve vybraných antických mýtech“ se zabývá otázkou zhoubnosti krásy ve vybraných antických mýtech. Zkoumá, zda v období antiky bylo o kráse uvažováno jako o původci negativních následků. Také se snaží poukázat na skutečnost, že byla krása v této době obvykle směšována s pojmy jako je dobro a užitek, avšak důsledek jejího působení nemusel být nutně dobrý. Tato fakta budou demonstrována na několika vybraných mýtech, zejména těch sepsaných Publiem Ovidiem Nasem, na některých pasážích z Homérovy Iliady a Odyssei a na dalších mýtech jiných autorů. V této práci budou také zmíněny a ozřejmeny úvahy o kráse a dobru řeckých antických filosofů, které podpoří závěry a vykreslí tehdejší vnímání tohoto fenoménu. Práce dále nabídne náhled do fungování starověké řecké společnosti, čímž se bude snažit o poskytnutí malé prezentace antického myšlení. Tento exkurz by tak měl ucelit představu o situaci, za jaké vznikaly mýty, které v sobě nesou známky zhoubné krásy. Práce se nicméně bude snažit dokázat, že krása je sama o sobě pouze krásná a nemohou jí být přisuzovány další vlastnosti, tak jako to vnímá současná estetika.

Abstract:

Bachelor thesis „Pernicious Beauty in Selected Myths of Antique Age“ deals with the question of beauty´s perniciousness in classical mythology. It examines whether beauty was considered the root of certain evils in classical antiquity. It also attempts to demonstrate that beauty was at the time usually associated with goodness and usefulness, though its consequences were not necessarily positive. These claims will be demonstrated through analysis of a number of selected myths, especially those written by Publius Ovidius Naso, some passages from Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, and additional myths from other authors. This work will also present and clarify reflections on beauty and goodness from ancient Greek philosophers which support the conclusions and illustrate the perception of this phenomenon at the time. The work will also offer some insight into the functioning of ancient Greek society, with the intention of providing a brief look at ancient thinking. This excursion should thus help to form a comprehensive notion of the situation, in which myths alluding to a pernicious beauty were created. The work will however try to prove that beauty in itself is only beautiful, and cannot be attributed to other properties, as perceived in present aesthetics.
