Cultural aspects of EIL in ELT textbooks

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá mezinárodním charakterem anglického jazyka a jeho odrazem v učebnicích anglického jazyka pro druhý stupeň základních škol v České republice. Práce je rozdělena na dvě části. První, teoretická část popisuje roli angličtiny v globalizovaném světě, uvádí důvody stojící za současnou popularitou angličtiny a popisuje odlišné role angličtiny v různých zemích světa, rovněž také vybízí k přehodocení tradičního chápání pojmu „rodilý mluvčí.“ Teoretická část se dále zabývá učebnicemi angličtiny a jejich rolí v kontextu výuky mezinárodního jazyka s důrazem na jejich kulturní obsah. Druhá, praktická část práce se skládá z obsahové analýzy vzorku v současnosti nejpoužívanějších učebnic angličtiny pro druhý stupeň základních škol s důrazem právě na jejich kulturní obsah. Cílem práce bylo zaznamenat a popsat současnou situaci týkající se kulturního obsahu učebnic a porovnat, do jaké míry se podobá zastoupení nerodilých mluvčích anglického jazyka v učebnicích realitě. Práce rovněž obsahuje návrhy na další možný výzkum v této poměrně neprobádané oblasti.

Abstract:

This thesis addresses the international character of the English language and how it is reflected in ELT textbooks used at lower secondary schools in the Czech Republic. The thesis is divided into two parts. The first, theoretical part introduces the role of English as an international language in the globalized world, the reasons for the popularity of English and the role English plays in different countries in the world, challenging the understanding of the term “native speaker.” Further on, it addresses textbooks and their role in the context of international language teaching with a focus on the cultural aspect of the language. The second part of the thesis includes a content analysis of the most commonly used textbooks at lower secondary schools in the Czech Republic with a focus on the cultural aspect of the language in these. The aim of the thesis was to observe and describe the current situation in terms of cultural content in textbooks and to compare how much the content matches the reality of the language today. The thesis also contains a number of suggestions for further research in this rather unexplored area.
