THE EFFECT OF THE FOREIGN EXCHANGE INTERVENTIONS ON THE REAL ECONOMY AND THE EXCHANGE RATE

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá intervencemi centrálních bank na devizovém trhu a jejich vlivem na reálné HDP a směnný kurz na příkladech České republiky a Izraele. V první části jsou diskutovány druhy intervencí, důvody k intervencím, problém pasti likvidity a specifika pozorovaných států. Vliv intervencí je zkoumán ve druhé části pomocí metody synthetic control. Ta vytvoří alternativní hodnoty, které jsou poté porovnány s těmi skutečnými. Na základě výsledků poskytnutých metodou není prokázán vliv intervencí na směnný kurz. Naopak výsledky metody ohledně vlivu na reálné HDP na osobu napovídají možný pozitivní efekt. Práce přináší neobvyklé použití metody synthetic control na zkoumání vývoje směnného kurzu. Výsledky, které práce poskytuje ohledně HDP, napovídají, že devizové intervence nepoškozují reálnou ekonomiku. Nicméně výsledky týkající se směnného kurzu naznačují, že jejich vliv na něj je nejasný.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis analyses foreign exchange (FX) interventions of central banks and their effect on the real GDP and the exchange rate. This phenomenon is examined on the examples of the Czech Republic and Israel. Various types of interventions, reasons why central banks intervene, the liquidity trap, and a specific environment of treated states are discussed in the first part of the thesis. The effect is examined in the second part with a synthetic control method. The method creates synthetic values which are compared with the real values. The effect of FX interventions on the exchange rate is not proven. Conversely, the results about the effect on the real GDP per capita suggest that FX interventions have a positive effect in this area. The synthetic control method is applied in a unique way for examining the exchange rate. Results of this thesis about the effect on the GDP suggest that FX interventions do not have negative effect on the real economy. Nevertheless, the results also suggest that the effect of interventions on the exchange rate is unclear.
