Numerical system in music composition

Abstract:

Přestože je funkce hudby a matematiky ve společnosti velmi rozdílná, jsou vzájemně spojeny silněji než pouhým konceptem. Tento text zkoumá numerické systémy starověké Číny (např. Wu Sing a Jin Jang) v praktické aplikaci hudební kompozice. Cílem první kapitoly je vymezit téma práce; jedná se o úvod do obecné problematiky a také do definic konkrétních systémů. V druhé kapitole jsou nastíněny základní koncepty, informace a filozofická fakta týkající se starověkého čínského systému Wu Sing, který zásadně ovlivnil mnoho oblastí raného čínského myšlení včetně na první pohled odlišných oborů jako je geomancie (známá také pod pojmem Feng šuej), astrologie, tradiční čínská medicína, hudba, vojenské strategie a bojová umění. Třetí kapitola vysvětluje, jak konstruovat různé stupnice na základě číselného pořadí Jin Jang a Wu Sing. Ve čtvrté kapitole je popsán způsob využití Wu Sing a Jin Jang k tvorbě souzvuků. Poslední kapitola se zaměřuje na průzkum využití posloupnosti Wu Sing a hledá rozličné možnosti vytvoření rytmických vzorců a ostinát, vycházející z předem daného pořadí v kombinaci s Jin Jang.

Abstract:

Although the functions of music and mathematics are very different in the society and populace, they are strongly connected to each other than common concept. This article is explorations of different ancient Chinese numerical systems (eg. Wu Xing and Yin Yang) in practical application of music composition. The main goal of the first chapter is to brief this project and draw readers’ attentions into this research. This chapter is meant to provide a general overview of the topics, which will be boarded in the research and their respective justifications, trying to turn it into an attractive text for the reader from the beginning. In the second chapter will provide some basic concepts, information and philosophical facts of the ancient Chinese numerical system-Wu Xing, which widely influenced plenty of fields of early Chinese thought, including seemingly disparate fields such as geomancy (better known as Feng shui), astrology, traditional Chinese medicine, music, military strategy and martial arts. The third chapter will explain how to construct different scales departing from the base of the Yin Yang and the Wu Xing numerical sequence. I would like to introduce how to make use of the Wu Xing and the Yin Yang to build up chords in the fourth chapter. The final chapter will focus on exploring how to make use of the Wu Xing sequence, and searching different possibilities to build up rhythmical patterns and ostinati departing from the order given by the sequence and the Yin Yang combinations.
