Helminths parasitizing dogs and their zoonotic potential

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce je zpracována formou literární rešerše a je zaměřena na helminty parazitující u psů a jejich zoonotický potenciál. Jedná se o helminty z kmene Nematoda a Cestoda, kteří parazitují především v gastrointestinálním traktu psa, ale někteří zástupci jako Dirofilaria immitis a Dirofilaria repens způsobují srdeční červivost. V důsledku těchto onemocnění dochází u psů k závažným klinickým příznakům, jako je např. anémie, průjem a úbytek tělesné hmotnosti nebo naopak infekce působí asymptomaticky, což nám brání v časné diagnóze. V častých případech, kdy jde o masivní infekci dochází i k úhynu zvířete. Zástupci těchto parazitických kmenů byli vybíráni na základě jejich zoonotického potenciálu. U každého zástupce byl popsán jeho výskyt, taxonomie, přenos na člověka a psa, morfologie a vývojový cyklus. U výskytu byla snaha najít záznamy o rozšíření helmintů v České republice a zjištění jejich prevalence. Psi jsou častými definitivními hostiteli, ale i mezihostiteli parazitů a zde hraje důležitou roli vzájemný vztah člověka a psa, díky kterému je člověk ohrožen a může se stát mezihostitelem. Rozšíření těchto druhů je spojeno s klimatickými změnami ve světě a s rozšířením vektorů přenášející daná onemocnění, jako jsou komáři čeledi Culicidae u Dirofilaria, ale také s hygienickými návyky lidí. Některá onemocnění jsou běžně rozšířená u psů v Evropě, ale některá jsou vzácnější i z pohledu přenosu na člověka, jako je Trichuris vulpis u kterého je stále diskutovaný zoonotický potenciál. Nejrozšířenějšími onemocněními zvířat v Evropě je nákaza Echinococcus granulosus, která probíhá asymptomaticky, nákaza D. caninum a v neposlední řadě nákaza Toxocara canis. Zajímavý vztah, kdy se paraziti stávají hostiteli nastává u Dirofilaria immitis a Dirofilaria repens s bakteriemi rodu Wolbachia. Pro každého parazita je charakteristický přenos na hostitele, ale Ancylostoma caninum a Toxocara canis mají stejnou schopnost transmamárního přenosu, což je veliký problém u čerstvě narozených štěňat. Díky malé informovanosti chovatelů a majitelů psů, jsou nákazy těmito parazity čím dál tím častější v městských oblastech, kdy nezodpovědní majitelé nesbírají výkaly po svých mazlíčcích a tím pádem se vyloučená vajíčka parazitů dále šíří do půdy, vody a na další hostitele. Z důvodu malého záznamu případů u některých parazitóz, např. Ancylostoma caninum, důsledkem špatného dodržování medikace vzniká rezistence na anthelmintika, což je velmi závažný problém v boji proti parazitům do budoucna.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis is prepared in the form of a literature search and focuses on helminths parasitizing dogs and their zoonotic potential. These are helminths of the phylum Nematoda and Cestoda, which parasitize mainly in the gastrointestinal tract of the dog, but some representatives such as Dirofilaria immitis and Dirofilaria repens cause heartworm. These diseases result in severe clinical signs in dogs, such as anaemia, diarrhoea, and weight loss, or, conversely, the infection is asymptomatic, which prevents early diagnosis. Often, in cases of massive infection, the animal may die. Representatives of these parasitic strains were selected based on their zoonotic potential. For each representative, its occurrence, taxonomy, transmission to humans and dogs, morphology and developmental cycle were described. For occurrence, an effort was made to find records of helminth distribution in the Czech Republic and to determine their prevalence. Dogs are frequent definitive hosts, but also intermediate hosts of parasites and here the mutual relationship between man and dog plays an important role, due to which man is at risk and can become an intermediate host. The spread of these species is linked to climatic changes in the world and to the spread of vectors transmitting the diseases in question, such as the Culicidae mosquitoes in Dirofilaria, but also to the hygiene habits of humans. Some diseases are common in dogs in Europe, but some are rarer in terms of transmission to humans, such as Trichuris vulpis for which the zoonotic potential is still debated. The most prevalent diseases in animals in Europe are Echinococcus granulosus, which is asymptomatic, D. caninum and finally, Toxocara canis. An interesting relationship where parasites become hosts occurs in Dirofilaria immitis and Dirofilaria repens with bacteria of the genus Wolbachia. Each parasite is characterized by host-to-host transmission, but Ancylostoma caninum and Toxocara canis have the same capacity for transmammary transmission, which is a major problem in newborn puppies. Due to low awareness among breeders and dog owners, infections with these parasites are becoming more common in urban areas, where irresponsible owners do not pick up their pets' feces and thus shed parasite eggs are further spread to soil, water and other hosts. Due to the low case records for some parasitosis, e.g. Ancylostoma caninum, poor medication compliance results in resistance to anthelmintics, which is a very serious problem in the future fight against parasites.
