Abstract:

V tejto práci sú analyzované tri romány – Surfacing (Z Hlbín), The Tent Peg a The Sweet Edge, ktoré boli vytvorené kanadskými spisovateľkami Margaret Atwood, Aritha Van Herk a Alison Pick. Hlavným cieľom práce je (vy)sledovať rôznorodosť vyobrazení kanadskej divočiny, ktorá je jedným z hlavných námetov vybraných románov. Ďalším cieľom je poukázať na to, ako táto významná doména oblasti literárnej a kultúrnej, ako i zemepisnej postupne splýva s jej ďalšou dôležitou zložkou – (veľko)mestom. Deväť hlavných vyobrazení kanadskej divočiny – Raj, Dichotómia božskosti (vo význame božskej krásy i božieho hnevu), Symbol sily a voľnosti, Inakosť, Pohraničie, Miesto uprostred, Splynutie, Zrkadlo a Mestská divočina – je v analýze predstavených a následne rozdelených do dvoch skupín, ktoré taktiež slúžia ako hlavné myšlienkové osi tejto analýzy. Toto prvotné delenie vyobrazení je urobené na základe podstaty vzťahu s ďalšou doménou kanadskej krajiny – mestom. Ide buď o úplnú odlišnosť alebo postupné približovanie sa a splývanie s mestom ako i – v širšom slova zmysle – s civilizovaným svetom ako takým.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with three novels – Surfacing, The Tent Peg and The Sweet Edge – written by the Canadian authors Margaret Atwood, Aritha Van Herk and Alison Pick respectively. The attempt of this thesis is to trace a variety of images of the Canadian wilderness as portrayed in the chosen novels and show how this important domain of Canada’s literary, cultural and geographic space gradually merges with its other significant component – the city. In the analysis, nine main images of the Canadian wilderness – The Paradise, The Sublime, The Symbol of Strength and Freedom, The Other as well as The Borderland, The Middle Ground, The Fusion, The Mirror and The Urban Wilderness – are introduced and classified into two groups also playing the role of the two principal axes of the analysis. This primary selection of the images was based on the nature of their relationship – either that of a clear opposition, or that of a gradual approaching and fusion – with the city or, in a larger sense, with the world of the civilized.
