Aggressive parent in a healthcare facility

Abstract:

Cíl: Cílem diplomové práce je zjistit výskyt agresivního chování u rodičů hospitalizovaných dětí a zároveň zmapovat vnímání agresivního chování zdravotnickými pracovníky, jež poskytují přímou ošetřovatelskou péči na dětských a novorozeneckých odděleních. Metodika: Výzkumný soubor tvořilo 161 sester, jež pracovaly na dětských a novorozeneckých odděleních ve Fakultní nemocnici v Ostravě, Městské nemocnici v Ostravě a Vítkovické nemocnici. K posouzení výskytu agrese u rodičů vůči ošetřovatelskému personálu, byl zvolen kvantitativní výzkum, kdy metodou k jednorázovému výzkumnému šetření byly použity dotazníky. K získání dat byly využity standardizované dotazníky, a to dotazník ?The management of aggression and violence attitude scale? (MAVAS) a dotazník zaměřený na ?Výskyt agrese pacientů vůči sestrám? (VAPS). K vyhodnocení testů byl použit chí-kvadrát test nezávislosti. Výsledky: Z výsledků výzkumu vyplývá, že téměř většina sester se ve své ošetřovatelské praxi již setkala s nějakou formou agresivního či násilného chování. Nejčastější formou agresivního chování byla slovní agrese. Dále bylo zjištěno, že vnímání agresivního chování ze strany rodičů nebylo ovlivněno věkem, vzděláním či délkou praxe zdravotnických pracovníků. Závěr: Přibývající násilí ve společnosti se odráží i v prostředí zdravotnické péče. Obdobně jako výsledky světových výzkumů i tento výzkum poukazuje na častý výskyt agresivního chování zaměřeného proti zdravotnickému personálu.

Abstract:

Aim: The aim of the thesis is to determine incidence of aggressive behavior of parents of hospitalized children and at the same time to find out how healthcare personnel, who provide direct care at pediatric and neonatology departments, perceive this aggressive behavior. Methodology: 161 nurses took part in this research. They all worked at pediatric and neonatology departments in University hospital of Ostrava, City hospital of Ostrava and Vítkovice hospital. A quantitative research was applied to evaluate the amount of incidence during which parents were aggressive on healthcare personnel. There were standardized questionnaires used during the research; specifically, questionnaire ?The management of aggression, violence and attitude scale?(MAVAS) and the questionnaire focused on ?The incidence of patients aggression against nurses?(VAPS). The chi-square test of independence was applied for the results evaluation. Results: The research indicates that most of the nurses have already experienced an aggressive or violent behavior of parents. The most common form of aggressive behavior was the verbal aggression. Further it was also found out that perceptive of aggressive behavior of parents have no influence to the age, education and length of working experience of medical workers. Conclusion: Increasing violence in society is reflected in the health care environment. This research, similarly as results from the global researches, is pointing out high incidence of aggressive behavior directed against the medical staff.
