Study of spectra of chemically peculiar star HD 142990

Abstract:

V této bakalářské práci se zabývám studiem spektra magnetické chemicky pekuliární hvězdy HD 142990. Spektra naměřil v letech 2011 a 2012 Jan Janík prostřednictvím spektrografu FEROS namontovaného na 2.2 m dalekohledu na observatoři La Silla v Chile. Zaměřila jsem se na identifikaci spektrálních čar a jejich proměnnost. Z čar He I, Mg II a Si II, které vykazovaly proměnnost v ekvivalentní šířce a radiální rychlosti, jsem se pokusila určit rotační periodu hvězdy. Kvůli neúplnému pokrytí rotační fáze spektroskopickým pozorováním jsem však bez znalosti její hodnoty z předchozích prací nebyla schopna periodu jednoznačně stanovit. Fázové křivky ekvivalentní šířky zkoumaných čar jsem porovnala se světelnou a magnetickou křivkou a zjistila jsem, že nadbytek křemíku v podobě skvrn na povrchu hvězdy je hlavní příčinou jejích světelných změn. Z křivek radiálních rychlostí a ekvivalentních šířek těchto prvků jsem odhadla, že na povrchu hvězdy se nacházejí minimálně dvě skvrny helia a hořčíku a pravděpodobně také dvě skvrny křemíku. Radiální rychlost hvězdy jsem spočítala z posunu vlnové délky čáry Hβ. Čáry vodíku jsou však ve spektru této hvězdy značně tepelně a rotačně rozšířené, proto můj výsledek není přesný.

Abstract:

In this bachelor thesis I study the spectrum of magnetic chemically peculiar star HD 142990. The series of spectra was measured in 2011 and 2012 by Jan Janík using a FEROS spectrograph mounted on a 2.2 m telescope at the La Silla observatory in Chile. I focused on the identification of spectral lines and their variability. From the lines He I, Mg II and Si II which showed variability in the equivalent width and radial velocity, I attempted to determine the rotational period of the star. However, due to incomplete coverage of rotational phase by spectroscopic observations, I was not able to unambiguously identify the period without knowing its value from the previous papers. I compared the phase curves of the equivalent width of examined lines with the light and magnetic ones and I have found that the excess of silicone in form of spots on the star’s surface is the main cause of its light variability. By comparing radial velocity and equivalent width phase curves I estimated that there are at least two spots of helium and magnesium on the star’s surface and probably two spots of silicone as well. I calculated the stellar radial velocity from the wavelength shift of the line Hβ. However, the hydrogen lines in the spectrum of this star are quite thermally and rotationally broadened so my result is not accurate.
