String Art - Art and Math

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on the connection of two seemingly unrelated areas - mathematics and art - through the technique of String Art, or curve stitching. The aim of the work is to introduce the String Art technique and expand it into the field of geometry, specifically in the area of congruent transformations in the plane. The thesis deals with the use of curve stitching in teaching mathematics, where it can serve not only as an effective visual aid, but also as a means through which students can learn about congruent transformations through creative activities. The practical output of the thesis will be the creation of a didactic tool intended for high school students, which should provide students with a simple and fun way to learn about congruent transformations in the plane. The didactic tool also includes a workbook that will help students gain practical experience and apply theory to specific examples. The introduction of the thesis presents Mary Everest Boole, a mathematician and author of didactic works on mathematics, who invented curve stitching. The String Art technique is also presented in the introduction. The main part of the thesis deals with congruent transformations in the plane and their connection to curve stitching, which is demonstrated through specific examples. Other areas of mathematics that can be connected to curve stitching in teaching mathematics are briefly mentioned as well. The core part of the thesis also includes a description of the creation of the didactic tool and a detailed description of the focus of individual tasks in the workbook.

Abstract:

Táto diplomová práca sa zameriava na prepojenie dvoch na prvý pohľad nesúvisiacich oblastí - matematiky a umenia - prostredníctvom techniky string art, resp. krivkového prešívania. Cieľom práce je predstaviť techniku string art a rozšíriť ju do oblasti geometrie, presnejšie do problematiky zhodných zobrazení v rovine. Práca sa zaoberá využitím krivkového prešívania vo vyučovaní matematiky, kde môže slúžiť nie len ako efektívna vizualizačná pomôcka, ale aj ako prostriedok, prostredníctvom ktorého sa môžu žiaci učiť zhodným zobrazeniam tvorivou činnosťou. Praktickým výstupom diplomovej práce bude vytvorenie didaktickej pomôcky určenej pre žiakov stredných škôl, ktorá by mala poskytnúť študentom jednoduchý a zábavný spôsob, ako sa naučiť o zhodných zobrazeniach v rovine. Súčasťou didaktickej pomôcky je aj pracovný zošit, ktorý žiakom pomôže získavať praktické skúsenosti a aplikovať teóriu na konkrétne príklady. V úvode práce je predstavená osobnosť Mary Everest Boole, matematičky a autorky didaktických prác o matematike, ktorá krivkové prešívanie vynašla. Tiež je tu predstavená aj samotná technika string art. Hlavná časť práce sa zaoberá zhodnými zobrazeniami v rovine a ich prepojením s krivkovým prešívaním, ktoré demonštrujem aj na konkrétnych príkladoch. Stručne spomeniem aj ďalšie oblasti matematiky, ktoré je možné s krivkovým prešívaním vo vyučovaní matematiky prepojiť. Nosnou časťou bude tiež popis tvorby didaktickej pomôcky a podrobnejší popis zamerania jednotlivých úloh v pracovnom zošite.
