Reaction of the European white elm seedlings (Ulmus laevis Pall.) to drought stress

Abstract:

Sucho je jeden z nejvíce limitujících faktorů obnovy lesa, přesto stále nemáme dostatek informací o reakcích rostlin na tento stresor. Cílem této práce bylo vyhodnocení fyziologických reakcí sazenic jilmu vazu na stres suchem po dokončeném vývinu listů. Jelikož funkce rostliny je spojena s jeho strukturou dalším cílem bylo porovnat měřenou rychlost fotosyntézy a průduchovou vodivost s anatomickou stavbou xylému v řapících. Výsledky ukázaly, že týdenní sucho způsobilo pokles rychlosti fotosyntézy o 79 % a snížení průduchové vodivosti o 82 %. V rámci struktury xylému řapíku byly zjištěny kladné korelace mezi jednotlivými anatomickými parametry a zároveň měly anatomické parametry nízkou variabilitu. Oproti tomu u fyziologických parametrů byla zjištěna výrazná variabilita po týdenní periodě sucha. To znamená, že jednotlivé sazenice reagovaly na stres suchem různě. Přestože na začátku experimentu nebyl zjištěn žádný vztah mezi anatomií a fyziologii, stres suchem již ukázal úzký vztah mezi strukturou a funkcí xylému. Bylo zjištěno, že sazenice s menší hydraulickou vodivostí řapíku, měly při stresu suchem větší rychlost fotosyntézy a větší průduchovou vodivost. Rychlost fotosyntézy byla také významně závislá na průměrné velikosti cévy. Tyto výsledky ukazují, že sadební materiál v lesních školkách je dostatečně variabilní, aby zajistil přežití alespoň několika jedinců při změně klimatických podmínek. Zajištění dostatečné variability sadebního materiálu tak bude hrát významnou roli při adaptaci lesních porostů na přepokládané změny klimatu v budoucnosti.

Abstract:

Drought is one of the most limiting factors, which affects the forest regeneration, nevertheless we still do not have enough information about plant responses to this stressor. The aim of this work was to evaluate the physiological responses of European white elm seedlings to drought stress after the completion of leaf development. Since the function of the plant is related to its structure, another goal was to compare the measured rate of photosynthesis and stomatal conductivity with the anatomical structure of xylem in petioles. The results showed that the one-week of drought caused 79 % decrease in photosynthesis rate and 82 % decrease in stomatal conductivity. Within the structure of the petiole xylem, positive correlations were found between the studied anatomical parameters and at the same time the anatomical parameters had low variability. In contrast, significant variability in physiological parameters was found at the end drought period. This means that individual seedlings responded differently to drought stress. Although no relationship between anatomy and physiology was found at the beginning of the experiment, a close relationship between xylem structure and function was observed at the end drought stress. It was found that seedlings with lower hydraulic conductivity of the petiole had a higher rate of photosynthesis and higher stomatal conductivity during drought stress. The rate of photosynthesis was also significantly dependent on the average vessel size. These results show that planting material in forest nurseries is sufficiently variable to ensure the survival of at least a few individuals when climate conditions change. Ensuring sufficient variability of planting material in forest nurseries will play an important role in the adaptation of forest stands to expected climate change in the future.
