3D printing of tactile maps linkable with mobile devices

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá nalezením, implementací a automatizací pracovního postupu pro tvorbu interaktivních tyflomap metodou 3D tisku. Proces je založen zejména na využití opensource a freeware nástrojů a volných zdrojů dat, jako je OpenStreetMap databáze, software QGIS pro export 2D dat do 3D a Blender pro 3D modelování. Pro stažení a zpracování dat je použit komerční software ArcGIS for Desktop. Zmíněné nástroje jsou použity spolu s vytvořeným skriptem a geoprocesingovými modely pro způsob přípravy tyflomap, který je méně časově náročný, a tím i finančně dostupnější než dříve využívané techniky, a přináší výsledky v jednotném stylu. Tyflomapy navržené tímto částečně automatizovaným způsobem jsou vyrobeny pomocí 3D tiskáren se dvěma extrudery kombinací vodivého a nevodivého materiálu, díky čemuž po spojení s mobilním zařízením nebo monitorem s kapacitním dotykovým displejem přináší možnost interaktivity. Ta je realizována formou hlasově sdělovaných doplňkových informací uživateli mapy, kterým je nevidomý či jinak zrakově postižený. Vytvořený postup přináší dvě varianty tvorby tyflomap s pravidelným uspořádáním interaktivních prvků nezávislým na obsahu mapy a s uspořádáním dle bodů zájmu. Pro tento typ byly navrženy tři tematická zaměření map. Práce se také zabývá volbou vhodných parametrů mapy, jako je měřítko, velikost mapových symbolů, vhodného obsahu apod., a to tak, aby bylo co nejlépe vyhověno potřebám cílových uživatelů tyflomap a současně byla brána v úvahu omezení použitých nástrojů a neúplnost zdrojových crowdsourcingových opensource dat. Z tohoto důvodu byla práce i průběžné výsledky konzultovány s tvůrci tyflomap i potenciálními uživateli tyflomap v TyfloCentru Olomouc, o. p. s. Pro testování byly vytvořeny interaktivní tyflomapy různých testovacích oblastí - např. centra měst Olomouc, Praha a Ostrava. Mapy byly vytvářeny za použití dvou typů 3D tiskáren. Zástupcem tiskáren s uzavřeným designem je MakerBot Replicator 2X, z tzv. domácích tiskáren byla využita tiskárna Poseidon Duo.

Abstract:

Aim of the thesis is to find, implement and automate a workflow of interactive tactile maps manufacturing using the 3D printing technology. The workflow is based mainly on opensource and freeware tools and sources, e.g. OpenStreetMap data, QGIS and Blender 3D modelling software. For data download and processing commercial software ArcGIS for Desktop was chosen. These sources are used together with own-design script and geoprocessing models to make the production of the tactile maps more effective, less time-consuming and uniform. The tactile maps for blind and other visually impaired people designed using this semi-automated workflow are then manufactured using dual-extruder 3D printers combining conductive and nonconductive material, and so they are connectable with mobile devices and screens with capacitive touchscreen. Therefore, the devices can provide additional voice information useful for potential map users. There are two possible variants of the final map result generated using this workflow - with regular structure of the interactive points and another possibility with the interactive points distributed per the POI's location. For this possibility, three thematic map types were suggested and supported by the geoprocessing models. The thesis also deals with choosing user-appropriate parameters of the map e. g. the map scale, map symbol size, content etc. This is done in order to fit the needs of blind people as much as possible on the one hand and taking into account the limitations of the tools available and incompleteness of the input opensource geodata on the other hand. To achieve this, the interim results were consulted with tactile map cartographers and tested with visually impaired in TyfloCentrum Olomouc, o. p. s. (institution helping visually impaired people in the city of Olomouc). For testing, tactile maps of different case-study areas were produced, e.g. the maps focused on some parts of the city centre of Olomouc, the capital of Praha and Ostrava. The maps were produced using two kinds of 3D printers both closed-design MakerBot Replicator 2X and home 3D printer Poseidon Duo.
