Analysis of metaphors as a universal tool? Transferred meanings in text analysis.

Abstract:

Základním tématem této práce je možnost využití textové analýzy přenesených významů v politologii se zaměřením na specifický nástroj sociálněvědního výzkumu, analýzu metafor. V práci se snažím jak o metodologickou reflexi tohoto instrumentu, tak o reflektování samotného konceptu metafory v souvislosti s politologickým výzkumem. Konkrétním výzkumným problémem je otázka univerzality analýzy metafor. Budu přitom pracovat s předpokladem, že pozitivismus pracuje s určitým pojetím objektivity, kterou lze ve vztahu k analýze metafor jako výzkumné metodě chápat jako univerzální aplikovatelnost a reprodukovatelnost. Pozitivistické uchopení objektivismu je ovšem problematické z hlediska poststrukturalismu, který jako širší ideové zázemí hermeneutiky tvoří základní východisko této práce. Z toho vyplývá důležitost filosoficko-metodologické reflexe dané metody. Cíle práce je zhodnocení univerzality, se kterou pracuje analýza metafor. Analýzu metafor jako univerzálně aplikovatelnou metodu v sociálněvědním výzkumu lze buď odmítnout, nebo ji lze jako univerzální potvrdit, za současného zpřesnění podmínek její aplikace, redefinování jejích výstupů a přeformulování vlastní filosofické báze, která může spočívat v určení jiného významu objektivity. Vzhledem k tomu předkládám následující výzkumné otázky: Je analýza metafor v sociálněvědním výzkumu z hlediska poststrukturalismu univerzálně použitelnou metodou a v jakém smyslu? Jaké jsou metodologické podmínky konceptu analýzy metafor v sociálněvědním výzkumu tak, aby odpovídala námi zvolenému hermeneutickému přístupu? Odpověďmi na tyto otázky dosáhnu přínosu práce, který spočívá v metodologickém zpřesnění použití konkrétní textové analýzy v sociálních vědách, specificky v politologii, ve které jsou tyto metody využitelné při kritickém posuzování politických diskurzů, obsahujících přenesené významy. Metodologické podmínky konceptu analýzy metafor, které výzkumu s aplikací analýzy metafor poskytují vnitřní logickou koherenci vzhledem k hermeneutickému přístupu, spočívají v několika bodech: (1) v hermeneutickém chápání předmětu výzkumu jakožto fenoménu, (2) v explicitním stanovení hlediska tohoto výzkumu, (3) v postupu analýzy hermeneutickou spirálou, (4) v přijetí experiencialistického chápání objektivity, (5) v uznání teorie metafory jako přeneseného významu a tudíž zároveň v odmítnutí pozitivistické teorie metafory jako homonymie. Použitou metodou práce bude kvalitativní obsahová analýza v hermeneutické spirále. Po prostudování prvního textu, konkrétně díla H.-G. Gadamera, selektuji pojmy, které jsou stěžejní vzhledem k tématu a cíli práce. Vytvořím tím první kontext. Klíčovými pojmy jsou hermeneutický kruh, horizont, rozumění, význam, smysl, kontext, text, promluva a metafora. Tyto pojmy tvoří kódy, které určím a strukturuji pomocí otevřeného kódování. Následně budu přistupovat k dalším textům zapojených do analýzy, a to obdobným způsobem, přičemž je jako jednotlivosti s jejich partikulárními kontexty budu neustále vztahovat k celku a naopak. Další texty tedy budu hermeneuticky zapojovat do celkového rozumění zkoumaného tématu. Budu odkazovat k dřívějším bodům argumentace, ale vždy s rozvinutější znalostí kontextu. Tímto postupem dospěji k hermeneutickému celku, díky kterému budu moci operacionalizovat smysl metafory a přeneseného významu.

Abstract:

The basic theme of this work is the possibility of using textual analysis of transferred meanings in political science with a focus on a specific tool of social science research, metaphor analysis. In my work I try to reflect on the methodological reflection of this instrument and on the reflection of the concept of metaphor in connection with political research. A particular research problem is the question of the universality of metaphor analysis. I will work with the assumption that positivism works with a certain concept of objectivity, which can be understood as a universal applicability and reproducibility in relation to metaphor analysis as a research method. However, the positivist grasp of objectivism is problematic from the point of view of poststructuralism, which, as a broader ideological background of hermeneutics, forms the basis of this work. This implies the importance of the philosophical-methodological reflection of the method. The aim of the work is to evaluate the universality which metaphors analysis works with. Metaphors analysis as a universally applicable method in social science research can either be rejected or it can be confirmed as universal, while specifying the conditions of its application, redefining its outputs and reformulating its own philosophical basis, which may consist in determining a different meaning of objectivity. In view of this, I am presenting the following research questions: Is metaphors analysis in social science research from the point of view of poststructuralism a universally applicable method and in what sense? What are the methodological conditions of the concept of metaphor analysis in social science research to match our hermeneutic approach? By answering these questions, I will achieve the contribution of the work, which consists in a methodological refinement of the use of a particular textual analysis in social sciences, specifically in the political science in which these methods are useful in critically assessing political discourses containing transferred meanings. The methodological conditions of the concept of metaphor analysis, which provide research with the application of metaphors analysis, provide logical coherence to the hermeneutic approach in several ways: (1) in the hermeneutic understanding of the subject of research as a phenomenon, (2) in explicitly determining the perspective of this research, (3) in the process of analysis by a hermeneutic spiral, (4) in adopting an experientialist understanding of objectivity, (5) in acknowledging the theory of metaphor as a transferred meaning, and thus simultaneously rejecting positivist metaphor theory as homonymy. The method of work used will be qualitative content analysis in a hermeneutic spiral. After studying the first text, specifically H.-G. Gadamer, I select terms that are central to the topic and the goal of the work. This will create the first context. Key terms are the hermeneutic circle, horizon, understanding, meaning, sense, context, text, speech and metaphor. These terms form codes that I define and structure using open coding. Subsequently, I will approach the other texts involved in the analysis in a similar way, and as an individual with their particular contexts I will constantly relate to the whole and vice versa. So I will hermeneutically engage other texts in the overall understanding of the topic. I will refer to earlier points of argumentation, but always with a more advanced knowledge of the context. By doing so, I will come to a hermeneutic whole that will enable me to operationalize the meaning of metaphor and transferred meaning.
