Handgrip strength as an indicator of self care capacity in senior citizens

Abstract:

Síla stisku ruky je dobrým ukazatelem celkové tělesné zdatnosti a schopnosti samostatně provádět základní denní činnosti. Dále se ukazuje, že osoby, které jsou méně spokojené v životě jsou méně aktivní a jejich tělesná zdatnost se snižuje. Cílem této práce je zjistit, zda existuje vztah mezi maximální sílou stisku ruky a soběstačností u populace seniorů. Účastníky výzkumu byli dospělí muži a ženy ve věku od 66 let, v počtu 142 jedinců. Každý se účastnil měření síly stisku ruky pomocí dynamometru Chatillon, výsledky zaznamenány v kilogramech (kg). Pro stanovení soběstačnosti bylo využito dotazníku vytvořeného pro-gramem Kardiovize 2030. Na základě 18 otázek bylo spočítáno skóre závislosti a skóre nespokojenosti, zaměřené na psychickou a emoční stránku života seniorů. Výsledky prokázaly, že existuje vztah (s negativní korelací) mezi skórem závislosti a sílou stisku ruky pro ženy, nikoliv pro muže. Dospěli jsme tedy k závěru, že silnější senioři jsou více soběstační než jejich slabší protějšky (prokázáno pro ženy). U obou pohlaví se prokázal vztah mezi spokojeností v životě (skóre nespokojenosti) a skórem závislosti. Předpokládáme, že starší jedinci spokojení v životě jsou lépe motivovaní a budou se i nadále zabývat aktivitami denního života, které pomohou udržet jejich úroveň soběstačnosti a tělesné síly. Naopak nesoběstační senioři mohou být více nespokojení v životě, což vede k depresím a poklesu motivace k úkonům denního života a k nižším hodnotám síly stisku ruky.

Abstract:

Handgrip strength is a good indicator of overall fitness and ability to independently perform basic daily tasks. Furthermore, it turns out that individuals that are less satisfied in life are less active and their physical strength decreases. The purpose of this thesis is to find out if there is a relationship between maximum handgrip strength and self care capacity in senior citizens. The participants were adult men and women aged 66 years and more, there was 142 participants. Each participated in the measurement of hand grip strength using the Chatillon dynamometer, the results were recorded in kilograms (kg). The questionnaire developed by the Kardiovize 2030 program was used to de-termine self care capacity. Based on 18 questions, the “score of dependence” and the “dissatisfaction score”, which focused on the mental and emotional aspects of senior's life, were calculated. The results showed a relationship, with a negative correlation, between the score of dependence and the handgrip strength for women, but not for men. Thus, we conclude that stronger seniors are more self-sufficient than their weaker counterparts (for women). Both sexes have shown a relationship between life satisfaction (dissatisfaction score) and the score of dependence. We assume that older individuals happy in life are better motivated and will continue to engage in daily life activities that will help maintain their level of self care capacity and physical strength. On the other hand, dependent seniors may be more dissatisfied in their lives, leading to depression and decreased motivation in activities of daily living and lower values of handgrip strength.
