Linux as a Port to the Internet Network

Abstract:

Tuto práci – Linux jako brána do sítě internet, jsem zaměřil na instalaci linuxového operačního systému, sloužícího jako brána pro připojení klientů v místní síti k internetu. Porovnávám výhody a nevýhody mezi řešením s HW směrovači a počítači s linuxovým operačním systémem. Zároveň uvádím jednoduchý popis jednotlivých služeb, jež se budou na bráně instalovat a spouštět. Na instalované bráně využívám pouze služby s open-source licencí. Všechny poskytované služby budou dostupné pro klienty v lokální síti. K provozovaným službám na bráně patří firewall pro zabezpečení a optimalizaci sítě, Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol pro automatické přidělování IP adres klientům, Domain Name System pro vzájemné převody doménových jmen a IP adres, proxy server pro úsporu přenesených dat z internetu a systém vzdálené správy brány. Popisuji možnosti některých konfiguračních voleb jednotlivých služeb a připojuji příklady konfigurací. U některých služeb také zmiňuji typy ochran před útoky z internetu. Součástí práce je bootovací CD s malou linuxovou distribucí, kterou jsem vytvořil pro snadnou instalaci brány, a dále popis vytvoření instalačního skriptu, který nainstaluje jak linuxový operační systém, tak všechny potřebné služby. Instalace proběhne bezobslužně ze sítě internet pomocí výše zmíněného skriptu.

Abstract:

This thesis – Linux as a Port to the Internet Network – focuses on installation of Linux operating system, which serves as a gateway for connecting of clients in the local network to the Internet. I am comparing advantages and disadvantages between solutions with HW router and computers with Linux operating system. I am also presenting an easy description of each of the services, which will be installed and will run from the gateway. In the installed gateway I am only using services with open-source licence. All provided services will be available for clients in the local network. The services in the gateway include firewall for security and optimalization of the network, Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol for automatic IP address allocation to the clients, Domain Name System for interconversion of domain names and IP addresses, proxy server for savings of transferred data from the Internet and system of remote gateway administration. I am describing different possibilities of some configuration options of each of the services and I also add some configuration examples. With some services I have included types of protection against attacks from the Internet. As a part of the thesis you will find a boot CD with a small Linux distribution, which I have developed for an easy gateway installation. Moreover, it includes description of installation script creation, which installs both Linux operating system and other required services. Unattended installation will be performed from the Internet network using the above mentioned script.
