The Icon of Saint Nicolas - research and restoration

Abstract:

Tato práce je věnovaná průzkumu a restaurování obrazu z konce 19. století. Jedná se o kultovní předmět, nazývaný také ikona. V praxi je takto definován obraz většinou přenosného charakteru. Objekt, kterým jsme se zabývali jest proveden na dřevěné desce, malovaný temperou a zobrazující svatého Mikuláše. První část práce je věnována analýze uměleckohistorické, kde jsme se zaměřili na původ a funkci ikony. Navazují informace o technologii její výroby a historické způsoby restaurování. Dále je také zkoumána malba samotná, a uvádí se stručné informace o vyobrazeném světci a historii předmětu. Další částí je technologický a materiálový průzkumu za účelem zjištění stavu a materiálového složení díla. K tomuto účelu byly použité invazivní a neinvazivní metody, mezi které patří fotografování ve světle o různých vlnových délkách, ATR-FTIR, LIBS, GC-MS, stratigrafický průzkum, analýza SEM-EDX a mikroskopie. Na základě výsledků provedených analýz byl navržen postup konzervování-restaurování a samotné konzervování-restaurování objektu. Dílčí průzkumy nám umožnily pochopení komplexní hodnoty předmětu, jeho historického pozadí a technologického profilu.

Abstract:

This study is dedicated to the research and restoration of the painting from the 19th century. The painting is meant to be a portable cult object, also known as icon. The following painting is carried out on the wooden panel with tempera, depicting the image of Saint Nicholas. The first part of the bachelor thesis is dedicated to the art history analysis, where the origin and the function of icon is explained, followed by the information about its production technology and historical methods of restoration. Afterwards, the painting itself is analysed and brief information about the Saint and the history of the object is presented. Following this, the technological research is done in order to determine the state of preservation and the material composition of the painting. Invasive and non-invasive methods were used for this purpose, such as photography under the light of different wavelengths, ATR-FTIR, LIBS, GC-MS, stratigraphy analysis, SEM-EDX and microscopy. Based on the results of the research, the plan of the restoration works was proposed and the intervention itself was carried out. Together with the art historical analysis it was possible to comprehend the complex value of the object, its historical background and technological profile.
