Your Faith Heals You: The Disabled Peoples Process Of Conversion To New Religious Movements

Abstract:

Tato studie se zabývá zdravotně postiženými lidmi zajímajícími se o určité nové náboženské hnutí nebo těmi, kteří do takové náboženské skupiny přímo vstoupili. Informace o zdravotně postižených členech určitých náboženských hnutí pro tuto studii byly nashromážděny v průběhu kvalitativního výzkumu provedeného mezi čtyřmi zdravotně postiženými respondenty. Tento kvalitativní výzkum byl uskutečněn za pomoci nestrukturovaných interview, která měla podobu plynulého vyprávění životních příběhů daných respondentů. Tento výzkum ukazuje, že zdravotní postižení ovlivňuje I náboženský život svých nositelů. Ve všech případech totiž důvodem konverze k novým náboženským hnutím bylo respondentovo postižení. Vliv zdravotního postižení byl buďto primární nebo sekundární. Primární vliv znamená, že někteří členové vstoupili do nového náboženského hnutí ve víře, že jim tento čin pomůže s jejich zdravotními obtížemi. Sekundární vliv znamená, že vstup do nového náboženského hnutí byl jedním z mnoha důsledků působení zdravotního postižení. Tento sekundární vliv byl u dotazovaných respondentů mnohem častější. To ukazuje, že celý život zdravotně postižených je ovlivňován jejich postižením, což působí I na jejich religiozitu. Analýza rozhovorů s respondenty tohoto výzkumu ukazuje konverzi jako postupný proces podobný Loflandovu a Starkovu modelu konverze. Ovšem v tomto případě zde jsou určité rozdíly, protože život zdravotně postižených,tak stejně jako jejich religiozita, má specifický charakter. Z tohoto důvodu byl model pozměněn a upraven pro specifické životní podmínky zdravotně postižených osob. Tato práce tedy ukazuje postup konverze u zdravotně postižených osob.

Abstract:

The study deals with religious life of disabled people. Although this topic is not very popular in the study of religions, I am convinced that this field should be aware of minority social groups´ religiosity. This study concerns with disabled people interested in some new religious movements or those who have joined a religious group. The information concerning new religious movements disabled members have been gained through qualitative research among four disabled respondents. This qualitative research have been realized through interview, which haven’t been strukturalized, but they have been fluent narration of life story of their respondents. This research shows that disabilities influence religious life. In all cases, the reason for converting to a new religious movement was the respondent’s disability. There are primary and secondary influences of disability. Primary influence means, that some of these respon-dents have joined new religious movements because of faith, that it helps his or her health problems. Secondary influence means, that entrance to new religious movements have been one of consequence of disability. However, secondary influence is more frequent. It indicates that the whole life of disabled people is influenced by their disability which also has impact on their conversion to new religious movements. The analysis of interviews with the respondents shows conversion as a consecutive process similar to Loflands and Stark model of conversion. However, there are some differen-ces because the life of disabled people as well as their religiosity is specific. It is why, this model have been modified and adapted to specific life condition of disabled people. There is model shows progress of conversion of disabled people.
