The Reflection of Dictatorship in Chilean Literature

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the literary analysis of Ariel Dorfman's drama La muerte y la doncella. The aim of the thesis is to highlight the cruel history associated with dictatorship and post-dictatorship in Chile and to analyze three key themes in detail: memory, trauma, and justice. These themes are further explored through an analysis of the main charactersPaulina Salas, Gerardo Escobar, and Roberto Miranda. The thesis uses a methodology focused on linking literary analysis with theories of trauma, memory, and post-dictatorial justice to show the psychological and social consequences of violence in Chilean society after the fall of the regime.

Abstract:

Esta tesis de grado aborda el análisis literario de la obra La muerte y la doncella, de Ariel Dorfman. El objetivo del trabajo es advertir la cruel historia relacionada con la dictadura y la posdictadura en Chile y analizar en detalle tres temas clave: la memoria, el trauma y la justicia. Estos temas se examinan más a fondo mediante el análisis de los personajes principales: Paulina Salas, Gerardo Escobar y Roberto Miranda. El trabajo utiliza una metodología centrada en la conexión entre el análisis literario y las teorías del trauma, la memoria y la justicia posdictatorial, con el fin de mostrar las consecuencias psicológicas y sociales de la violencia en la sociedad chilena tras la caída del régimen.
