Work-life balance strategies of female medical students and female doctors in selected organisation

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis is to answer on how work-life balance (WLB) strategies of female medical students and female physicians differ. Theoretical part of the thesis focuses on pointing out increasing work-life imbalance which results mainly from changes in character of contemporary families, traditional distribution of gender roles and their reproduction. Moreover, approaches towards harmonisation measures from the point of view of both state and hospital, as a employer, are presented. Most importantly, the theoretical part deals with physicians’ barriers while achieving WLB and types of harmonisation strategies preferred by parents. The main goal is to help female medical students to identify factors which were designated by female physicians as important from the point of view of WLB as well as to choose the most sufficient harmonisation strategy. Interviewing both group of female medical students and female physicians, attitudes and needs in the WLB area are designated and confronted. All survey participants have individual preferences, however, they have to determine their harmonisation strategy based on limited structural and institutional options.

Abstract:

Cieľom diplomovej práce je odpovedať na otázku do akej miery sa odlišujú predstavy študentiek medicíny od reálnych stratégií praktikujúcich lekárok v oblasti harmonizácie práce a rodiny (HPaR). V teoretickej časti práce som poukázala na narastajúcu nerovnováhu medzi prácou a rodinou. Tá vyplýva najmä zo zmien v charaktere rodiny, tradičnom rozdelení genderových rolí a jeho reprodukciou. Následne som sa venovala prístupu ku harmonizačným opatreniam jednak zo strany štátu a jednak zo strany nemocnice ako zamestnávateľa. Teoretická časť sa taktiež venuje bariéram zdravotníckych pracovníkov pri HPaR a rozoberá typy harmonizačných stratégií preferovaných rodičmi. Hlavným cieľom je pomôcť študentkám medicíny identifikovať faktory, ktoré lekárky označili za dôležité z hľadiska HPaR a umožniť im tak zvoliť si pre nich najvhodnejšiu harmonizačnú stratégiu. Pomocou rozhovorov so skupinou študentiek medicíny a lekárok som zisťovala postoje a potreby v oblasti HPaR, tak predpokladané ako aj skutočné, a najvzájom som ich konfrontovala. Jednotlivé respondentky majú individuálne preferencie, no svoju harmonizačnú stratégiu sú nútené formovať v rámci obmedzených štruktúrálnych a inštitucionálnych možností.
