The (non-)observance of pragmatic principles in American TV sitcoms

Abstract:

This MA thesis explores the (non-)observance of pragmatic principles in American TV sitcoms. The theoretical part of this thesis defines and describes the cooperative principle, and the politeness principle, provides a detail description of the Gricean and Leech's maxims, discusses the effects of the non-observance of both pragmatic principles, defines humor and focuses on a sitcom as a television genre. The practical part of the analysis consists of 22 episodes of the popular American TV sitcom Young Sheldon. The prime focus of the analysis is on Sheldon, the main character of the show, and the failure to uphold the maxims of CP and PP. The analysis shows that the non-observance of the maxims of both principles may carry the potential to create humorous situations.

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá (ne)dodržováním pragmatických principů v amerických televizních sitkomech. Teoretická část práce definuje a popisuje kooperační princip a princip zdvořilosti, poskytuje detailní popis maximů Paula Grice a Geoffreyho Leeche, rozebírá účinky nedodržování obou pragmatických principů, definuje humor a zaměřuje se na sitkom, co se týče televizních žánrů. Praktická část práce se skládá z 22 epizod populárního amerického televizního sitkomu Malý Sheldon. Analýza se primárně zaměřuje na hlavní postavu sitkomu, na Sheldona, a jeho nezdary týkající se dodržování kooperačního principu a principu zdvořilosti. Analýza ukazuje, že nedodržování maximů obou principů může nést potenciál k vytváření humorných situací.
