Psychological Profits and Looses of Parents of Children with Intellectual Disability

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá náročnými ale také pozitivními zkušenostmi rodičů dětí s mentálním postižením. Teoretická část je uvedena problematikou zapojení člověka s mentálním postižením do společnosti, dále se zabývá tématem vyrovnání se rodičů s postižením vlastního dítěte a speciálními aspekty jejich rodičovství a podává přehled poznatků o pozitivním přínosu mentálně postižených dětí pro jejich rodiče. Tento pozitivní přínos plyne částečně z toho, že rodiče vnímají postižení svého dítěte až na druhém místě, důležitější je pro ně dítě samo. Část pozitivního přínosu rodičů je také možné vysvětlit jako součást růstu rodičů, ke kterému dochází v důsledku čelení nepříznivým skutečnostem. Tyto adaptivní změny (označované v odborné literatuře např. jako posttraumatický růst) plynou ze zvládání nároků obsažených v péči o dítě, z velice náročné zkušenosti, kterou rodiče s určitým časovým odstupem vnímají jako obohacující. Výzkum, kterého se účastnilo celkem 94 matek a 20 otců postižených dětí, se zaměřuje na determinanty subjektivně vnímaného pozitivního zisku. Prokázal některé vztahy mezi faktory prostředí, charakteristikami dětí s postižením a charakteristikami matek a jimi vykazovaným pozitivním ziskem v různých oblastech. Výsledky poukazují na to, že pro pochopení situace rodičů dětí s mentálním postižením je důležité zabývat se také pozitivními aspekty jejich zkušenosti. Poznatky o pozitivních zkušenostech rodičů postižených dětí mohou mít důsledky nejen pro samotné rodiče a jejich děti, ale také pro praxi péče, které je rodinám s postiženými dětmi nabízena. Mohou ovlivnit také způsob, jakým jsou lidé s mentálním postižením ve společnosti přijímáni.

Abstract:

The thesis focuses on challenging but also positive experience of parents of children with intellectual disability. The review starts with the topic of the integration of people with intellectual disability in the society. The following chapter describes the process of adaptation of parents facing the disability of their child and special aspects of their parenthood including benefits connected with the parenting of a child with disability. Benefits for parents resource from the relationship with their child despite his or her handicap because it is the child and not his or her handicap what becomes a priority for them, and also from their personal growth caused by facing the unfavorable reality. These parental changes (in references called also Posttraumatic growth) arise in order to cope with challenges accompanying the care of a child with disability. Many parents consider their demanding experience also enriching after a certain period of time. Ninety-four mothers and twenty fathers have participated in the research focused on determinants of perceived benefits from parenting a child with intellectual disability. The study has proved relations among characteristics of the environments, the childrens and the mothers characteristics and benefits perceived by the mothers in different areas (the sample of fathers was excluded from the analysis due to its small number). The results show that to understand the situation of parents who take care of a child with intellectual disability, it is also important to deal with the positive aspects of their experience. Information about their positive experiences can influence not only parents and their children, but also the practice of services offered to these families. It can also have consequences for acceptance of people with intellectual disabilities in the society.
