Early New High German pamphlets in the Kingdom of Bohemia - Linguistic analysis of two Early New High German texts from the period of the Winter King Frederick V of Palatinate

Abstract:

This M.A. thesis deals with the linguistic analysis of two Early Modern High German (EMHG) texts, i.e., flyers from the period of the reign of Frederick V of Palatinate in the kingdom of Bohemia. Following an introduction to the history of Bohemia in the early 17th century, the two texts are each presented synoptically in four versions: the EMHG text in Gothic print, its letter-to-letter transcript in modern antiqua print, a Modern High German morphem-by-morphem gloss and, finally, an idiomatic translation into Modern Standard German. The synopsis aims at making the original text comprehensible for a contemporary reader and provides a basis for the last main section in which analyses are conducted on various linguistic levels. One major aim of this research is to point out the linguistic differences between two stages of the German language, EMHG and Modern Standard German, by comparing texts from the 17th century with their modern translations.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá lingvistickou analýzou dvou raně novohornoněmeckých textů, tzv. letáků, z doby vlády Fridricha Falckého v Království českém. Texty, které navazují na úvod do historie českých zemí 17. století, jsou synopticky představeny ve čtyřech verzích: raně novohornoněmecký text psaný frakturou, jeho doslovný přepis v moderní antikvě, novohornoněmecká glosa upravující text morfém za morfémem a nakonec idiomatický překlad do novodobé němčiny. Cílem této synopse je zpřístupnit text současnému čtenáři. Dále slouží jako základ pro poslední část, která se zabývá analýzami na rozličných lingvistických úrovních. Jedním z hlavních cílů této práce je poukázat na lingvistické rozdíly mezi dvěma jazykovými obdobími, ranou novohornoněmčinou a současnou němčinou, na příkladu porovnání textů ze 17. století s jejich moderním překladem.
