Application of functionalist translation conceptions to the Czech version of Raymond Queneau's Exercices de style

Abstract:

Tato práce má za cíl provést analýzu české verze Exercices de style (Stylistická cvičení) francouzského autora Raymonda Queneaua, která vyšla v překladu Patrika Ouředníka. Teoretická část je zaměřena na charakter literární tvorby Raymonda Queneaua a na experimentální skupinu Dílna potenciální literatury (Oulipo), na jejímž založení se Queneau podílel. Exercices de style jsou považována za jeden z modelových textů pro aktivity tohoto uskupení. Praktická část přináší vhled do funkcionalistických koncepcí překladu, které slouží jako teoretická východiska rozboru. Je zde provedena přípravná analýza výchozího francouzského textu zaměřená na okolnosti vzniku, vydání a recepci, na obsahovou a formální stránku i na překladatelské obtíže, které text přináší. Přípravná analýza cílového českého textu se věnuje překladateli, vydání a změnám v reedicích. Následuje rozbor překladu deseti textů Stylistických cvičení za uplatnění principů funkcionalistického překládání. Závěr shrnuje rysy českého překladu na základě analyzovaných úryvků.

Abstract:

This work aims to analyse the Czech version of Exercices de style (Exercises in Style) written by French author Raymond Queneau and translated by Patrik Ouředník. The theoretical part is focused on the character of Raymond Queneau’s literary work and on the experimental group Workshop of potential literature (Oulipo), which Queneau co-founded. Exercices de style are regarded as one of model texts for the activities of this group. The practical part brings insight into functionalist translation concepts which form the theoretical basis of the analysis. The preparatory analysis of the original French text focuses on the circumstances of its origin, its editions, reception, content and formal aspects, as well as on the translation difficulties it introduces. The preparatory analysis of the target Czech text is dedicated to the translator, publication and changes in the reprints. An analysis of ten texts of Exercises in Style follows, using the principles of functionalist translation. The conclusion summarises the characteristics of the Czech translation according to the analysed passages.
