Subjectivity in Miguel Torga's Diary

Abstract:

Miguel Torga (1907–1995), vlastním jménem Adolfo Rocha, byl portugalský básník, prozaik, esejista a dramatik a významná osobnost portugalské literární scény 20. století. Torgovo bohaté a mnohovrstevnaté umělecké dílo, jehož specifickou součástí je Deník (1932–1993), charakterizují existencialistické tóny a zájem o introspekci. Kouzlo Torgova Deníku, který patří v Portugalsku na poli deníkového psaní k průkopnickým, spočívá v neustálém zkoušení hranic žánru. Neustávající zájem autorského subjektu o nazírání sebe sama je jeho určujícím rysem a opírá se o něj tato disertační práce. Záměrem předkládané disertace je studium subjektivity v Torgově Deníku, v němž se reflexe vlastního já stává gravitačním centrem vytvořeného (deníkového) světa. Disertace rovněž přispívá ke zkoumání žánru deníku jako prostoru, ve kterém se realizuje autorské já. Subjektivita je v Deníku zkoumána pomocí modelu Sidonie Smith a Julie Watson. Autorky rozeznávají šest perspektiv, kterými lze nahlížet na téma subjektivity původců autobiografických textů: paměť, zkušenost, identitu, prostor, tělesnost a aktérství. Každé z těchto hledisek přináší poněkud odlišný, přestože vzájemně propojený pohled na autorské já. Reflexe autorského subjektu dotýkající se vlastní subjektivity doplňuje jeho uvažování nad vztahem básníka a poezie. K zamyšlení vybízí samotné jméno autora. Adolfo Rocha si vytvořil Miguela Torgu, osudem předurčeného básníka, který zaštítil veškerou Rochovu uměleckou tvorbu. Dizertace se drží teorie Marie Morais Monteiro, která Torgu považuje za Rochovo alteronymum. Na úrovni genologické je deník zařazen do širšího pole autobiografické literatury a v disertaci upozorňuji na jeho konstitutivní rysy. Na základním půdorysu daném definicí pojmu však deník nabízí velkou variabilitu danou fragmentární formou, neuzavřeností a schopností vstřebávat rozmanité žánrové prvky a žánrové struktury. Torga do Deníku zařazuje především básně, které tvoří více než třetinu obsahu, ale také povídky, cestopisné postřehy či chystané proslovy. Provázanost deníkových záznamů s básněmi je umocněna vstupy s metapoetickou tematikou, které reflektují proces psaní a pojetí Básníka. Deníkové já rozehrává vědomou i nevědomou hru masek a pěstovaného osobního mýtu po vzoru první portugalské modernistické generace, zároveň však usiluje o naplňování požadavku upřímnosti, kterou vznášeli členové Přítomnosti, což vyzývá k zamyšlení nad Torgovým osobitým experimentem na poli identity, autenticity a literární fikce. Deník je tak mimořádně podnětným materiálem k reflexi subjektivity a zároveň vztahování se k vnějšímu světu.

Abstract:

Miguel Torga (1907–1995), whose real name was Adolfo Rocha, was a Portuguese poet, writer, essayist and playwright, and one of the foremost figures of the 20th-century Portuguese literature. Diary (1932–1993) is a specific piece of Torga’s rich and multi-layered artwork, characterised by existentialist questions and a call for introspection. Torga’s Diary, which pioneered the wave of interest in diary writing in Portugal, entices the reader by constantly testing the genre’s boundaries. The unceasing tendency to introspection shown by the diary I is the key feature underpinning this doctoral thesis. The thesis focuses on the theme of subjectivity in Torga’s Diary, in which self-reflection becomes the center of gravity of the created (diary) world. This thesis also contributes to the study of the diary genre as the space in which the author’s self is found. I make use of the theoretical framework proposed by Sidonie Smith and Julia Watson. Smith and Watson identify six components of autobiographical acts, including memory, experience, identity, embodiment, space, and agency. Each of these aspects brings a somewhat different, though interconnected perspective on the autobiographical I. The focus on subjectivity is complemented by the musings of the diary I on relationship between poetry and the Poet. The sole name of the author raises an array of questions. Miguel Torga, impelled by force of destiny to be a poet, was created by Adolfo Rocha to take over his artistic work. Inspired by Maria Morais Monteiro’s theory, I consider Torga to be Rocha’s alteronym. In terms of genealogy, the diary is included in the broader field of autobiography and the thesis describes its constitutive features. The diary offers great variability thanks to the fragmentary form, openness, and the ability to absorb various genre elements and genre structures. Torga’s Diary includes particularly poems which account for more than a third of the content as well as short stories, travel notes, or drafts of Torga’s speeches. The close link with poetry is enhanced by metapoetic reflections and poems which discuss the writing process and the concept of the Poet. The diary I plays a conscious as well as unconscious game of masks and personal myths, following the example of the first Portuguese modernist generation while, at the same time, seeks to fulfil the requirement for sincerity laid down by the Presença Movement calling for a debate on Torga’s singular experiment in the field of identity, authenticity and literary fiction. Diary is thus an extremely stimulating material to reflect upon the subject’s interest in introspection as well as its relationship with the outer world.
