The effect of group salience, social dominance orientation and empathy on ageism

Abstract:

Cílem práce je zjistit, zda vybrané dispoziční a situační proměnné souvisí s množstvím negativních postojů vůči starým lidem, tedy ageismem. Konkrétně se studie zaměřuje na vztah skupinové výraznosti a ageismu, mediační účinek afektivní (AF) a kognitivní (KOG) situační empatie na souvislost mezi skupinovou výrazností a ageismem a také na vztahy mezi ageismem, orientací na sociální dominanci (SDO) a třemi aspekty dispoziční empatie – přijímáním perspektivy (PT), empatickým zájmem (EC) a osobním distresem (PD). Výzkumný soubor tvořil 260 lidí ve věku od 18 do 30 let, z toho 82 mužů a 178 žen. Průměrný věk respondentů činil 24,54 let (SD = 2,61). Účastníci byli rozděleni do jedné kontrolní skupiny a dvou experimentálních skupin podle míry skupinové výraznosti, která jim byla navozena položkami v dotazníku. Pro účely studie byla do českého jazyka převedena revize Fraboniho škály ageismu (FSA-R). Výsledky studie ukazují, že skupinová výraznost zřejmě nesouvisí s mírou ageismu ani není zprostředkována situační empatií. Naopak SDO, EC, AF a KOG jsou významnými prediktory míry ageismu – SDO přispívá ke zvyšování ageismu, zatímco EC, AF a KOG ho snižují. Účinek EC na míru ageismu byl nejen přímý, ale i nepřímý, zprostředkovaný SDO. Signifikantní, avšak velice slabá negativní korelace byla objevena i mezi PT a ageismem, což je vzhledem k mnoha studiím potvrzujícím těsnou souvislost mezi PT a negativními meziskupinovými postoji překvapivé. S ageismem nijak nesouvisel pouze PD.

Abstract:

The aim of this study is to examine, how certain dispositional and situational variables affect the amount of negative attitudes towards the elderly – so called ageism. Particularly, the study focuses on the association between group salience and ageism, mediation effect of affective (AF) and cognitive (COG) situational empathy on this association and the relations between ageism, social dominance orientation (SDO) and three aspects of dispositional empathy, that is perspective taking (PT), empathic concern (EC), and personal distress (PD). The sample consisted of 260 participants in the age of 18 to 30 years, 82 men and 178 women. The average age of the sample was 24.54 years (SD = 2.61). Participants were divided into two experimental groups, low and high group salience sample, and one control group. For the purpose of the study, Fraboni Ageism Scale – Revised was translated to Czech language. The results revealed that group salience did not have direct effect on the amount of ageism. Also, the mediation effect of situational empathy was found insignificant. On the other hand, SDO, EC, AF, and COG were significant predictors of ageism – SDO positively affects ageism, whilst EC, AF, and COG do otherwise. The effect of EC on ageism was also indirect, mediated by SDO. Significant, but weak negative correlation was found between PT and ageism, which is surprising, considering the amount of studies reporting a strong association between PT and negative intergroup attitudes. PD was not significantly related to ageism.
