Two Allen's gangster films (Take the Money and Run, Small Time Crooks) - analyse and comparison in context of his works of art and contemporary production

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá analýzou a srovnáním dvou filmů Woody Allena - "Seber prachy a zmiz" a "Darebáčci". Jsou vybrány proto, že jsou odlišné od zbytku jeho tvorby - jedná se o lupičské komedie (parodie), v nichž je kladen velký důraz na gag a komickou situaci. Autorka nejprve provede naratologickou analýzu a poté srovnání obou filmů v rámci Allenovi tvorby i soudobé produkce.

Abstract:

The authors work is focused on two of many films of Woody Allen Take Money and Run and Small Time Crooks which are completely different from the rest of his films. These films are gangster comedies with a bizarre main character who differs from other Allens personages. This man is not a New York intellectual who can easily talk about many Gnostic themes he is an average male who wants to become rich without working thats why he robs the banks. This main character and the theme connects these two films together but there are also components which dont make them so similar. Between these two films there is a thirty years gap which makes these films unlike (in the way of narrative and style). The author first makes a narrative analysis of Small Time Crooks and Take Money and Run and then puts these films together and compares them. Small Time Crooks is Allens late film and we can see it on its style and narrative which are adapted so they are easily to be read while Take the Money and Run is Allens film debut so it is a little bit dilettantish and amateurish with a wish to be different from other contemporary films. In this film Allen uses citations to many films from silent era (Brothers Marx, Charlie Chaplin etc.). In these two films Allen uses gags to pitch in a comic effect the most frequent is a verbal gag which is at least in Take the Money and Run used very often. We can say that this gag is an axis of these two films. In conclusion the author talks about relationship between these two Allens films, the rest of his work of art and contemporary production and its manners.
