Comparison of Java and Kotlin technologies when applied to a specific IoT device

Abstract:

Goal of this bachelor thesis is to compare Java and Kotlin for Android application development and recommend suitable langugage for future development. Main topics of this comparision are performance, ease of development and compatibility. Analysis of advantages and disadvantages of each programming language is also part of the thesis with a presentation of their differences. This comparision is realized by creation of two applications. One is developed using Java, the other one using Kotlin. Hypothesis are created for purposes of this comparision. Both of the applications are tested on an HP device in collaboration with Y Soft. Based on the results of our testing previously mentioned hypothesis are evaluated and Kotlin is chosen as the suitable language for following reasons. Kotlin is slower when comapring performance and response time to Java by 4 ms, which represents minimal difference. Main advantage of Kotlin when compared to Java is code quality and readability. In this project Kotlin used approximately 28.5 % less lines of code than Java. Therefore Kotlin is chosen as the suitable language for future Android development.

Abstract:

Úlohou bakalárskej práce je porovnať Javu a Kotlin pre vývoj Android aplikácií a na základe výsledkov porovnania odporučiť vhodný jazyk pre budúci vývoj. Hlavnými bodmi porovnania je výkonnosť, jednoduchosť vývoja a kompatibilita. Súčasťou práce je analýza výhod a nevýhod jednotlivých jazykov spolu s predstavením ich rozdielov. Porovnanie je realizované vytvorením dvoch aplikácií. Jedna je naprogramovaná pomocou Javy, druhá pomocou Kotlinu. Pre potreby porovnania sú vytvorené hypotézy. Aplikácie sú testované na zariadení HP v spolupráci s firmou Y Soft. Na základe výsledkov testovania sú vyhodnotené hypotézy a je odporučený jazyk Kotlin z nasledujúcich dôvodov. Kotlin je v porovnaní rýchlosti a doby odozvy pomalší o 4 ms, čo predstavuje minimálny rozdiel. Hlavnou výhodou Kotlinu v porovnaní s Javou je čistota a kvalita kódu. V rámci tohto projektu ušetril približne 28,5 % riadkov kódu oproti Jave. Preto je Kotlin vybraný ako vhodný jazyk pre budúci vývoj pre Android.
