Wolf domestication based on archaeological findings and genetic studies

Abstract:

Vlk obecný (Canis lupus) je předkem jednoho z nejrozšířenějších domestikovaných živočišných druhů na světě, a to psa domácího, známého také jako Canis lupus familiaris. Proces domestikace vlka je stále předmětem vědeckého zkoumání, a i když existuje mnoho studií zkoumajících tento proces, jejich výsledky se často liší. Konečné závěry o původu psa komplikuje absence jednoznačných archeologických nálezů a starobylé křížení mezi psem a jeho předkem, vlkem obecným. Během procesu domestikace došlo k rozvoji různých adaptací, které psům umožnily přizpůsobit se životu po boku člověka. Křížení neboli hybridizace mezi psy a volně žijícími vlky v přírodě je dnes aktuálním problémem. Tento jev může mít za následek ohrožení genetické integrity rostoucích populací vlků v Evropě. Hybridní jedinci mohou přenášet geny mezi oběma druhy, což může vést k ztrátě specifických adaptací a změnám v genofondu. Tímto způsobem se může ovlivnit evoluce vlků a jejich schopnost přežít v různých prostředích

Abstract:

The gray wolf (Canis lupus) is the ancestor of one of the most widely domesticated animal species in the world, the domestic dog, also known as Canis lupus familiaris. The process of wolf domestication is still the subject of scientific investigation, and although there are many studies examining this process, their results often vary. Definitive conclusions about the dog's origins are complicated by the lack of definitive archaeological findings and the ancient interbreeding between the dog and its ancestor, the gray wolf. During the process of domestication, various adaptations were developed that allowed dogs to adapt to life alongside humans. Crossbreeding or hybridisation between dogs and wild wolves in the wild is a current problem. This phenomenon may result in a threat to the genetic integrity of the growing wolf populations in Europe. Hybrid individuals can transfer genes between the two species, which can lead to loss of specific adaptations and changes in the gene pool. This may affect the evolution of wolves and their ability to survive in different environments.
