Embargo as an instrument of American politics against Iran

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zaměřuje na využívání embarg Spojenými státy v mezinárodní politice, přičemž hlavním cílem je analýza amerického embarga vůči Íránu. Práce charakterizuje typologii sankcí, základní teoretické přístupy k sankcím a jejich roli v mezinárodní politice. Na několika případech je ukázáno, jakým způsobem používají sankce Spojené státy americké a pnutí, které se objevuje v americké sankční politice mezi Kongresem a prezidentem. První část práce tak tvoří teoretický základ pro sestavení kritérií, na jejichž základě je možné posoudit efektivnost amerických sankcí vůči Íránu. V navazujících kapitolách, které představují těžiště práce, jsou dále analyzovány vztahy mezi Íránem a Spojenými státy, stejně jako i sankční politika Spojených státu vůči Íránu. Problematiku doplňuje i studie ekonomických dopadů sankcí na Írán. Závěr práce pak přináší zhodnocení, zda byla sankční politika Spojených států vůči Íránu na základě stanovených kritéri úspěšná.

Abstract:

Diploma thesis focuses on the application of embargoes in international politics by the United States of America, whereas the main goal is the analysis of American embargo against Iran. This paper outlines typology of sanctions, fundamental theoretic approaches to sanctions and its role in international politics. Several cases demonstrate how sanctions are used by USA and tension which appears in American's sanction politics between the Congress and the president. Theoretical ground for formulation of criteria, based on which the effectiveness of American sanctions against Iran is analyzed, is defined the first part of the thesis. The core of paper is represented by following chapters, where the relations between United States and Iran, as well as the American sanctions politics against Iran, are analyzed. The topic is studied also from the view of the economic impact of the sanctions on Iran. Conclusion of the thesis is devoted to evaluation of the effectiveness of sanctions politics of the USA against Iran and answering the primary question whether their application has been successful considering stated criteria.
