Abstract:

In early 2020, Covid-19 paralyzed the world. An insidious disease spreading through the air. An incubation period of up to 14 days and the possibility of asymptomatic transmission made everybody a possible transmitter as well as patient. At the time of this writing, the disease is responsible for 16,923,279 infections, of which 664,193 were fatal (as of July 29, 2020). Shortly after the outbreak of the pandemic, there was a consensus that the best way to defend against the disease was to avoid it by domestic quarantine and wearing masks. Countries that flirted with the possibility of herd immunity often found themselves on the brink of crisis of their health system. Slovakia responded quickly and without major protests. Protest voices were heard against the way the state was governed rather than the fundamental measures themselves, that is stay home, wear a mask, wash hands. Bratislava quickly transformed into a dystopian space, known from science fiction novels and films, with emptied streets and other public spaces. Parking lots and shopping malls became places of ghosts. Their traditional users took refuge in the safety of their homes. Life always finds its way though. Likewise, social interaction or popular culture experienced rapid digital transformation, and people began to look for something to experience at a distance. Musicians streamed their concerts and friends moved their daily "beer" to conference phones, which they previously knew from corporate meetings. Disinfection and social distancing complemented starndard hygiene routines. Red zones of hospital emergency rooms were among places where Covid-19 paranoia concentrated. Every patient who needed to be treated and had symptoms of Covid-19 (travel history, shortness of breath ...) landed there. The staff had to treat every patient as if they had Covid-19 infection. Other such places representing societal hopelessness and the transformation of spaces, were institutions providing senior social services. In the Residence of social services in Pezinok the staff and clients were imprisoned for five weeks with confirmed Covid-19 infection and more than 15 deaths. Here, I documented testing by representatives of the National Crisis Staff for tests of staff and clients. In my work, I observe the empty public spaces and the new forms of life with Covid-19. Abandoned space. Who left it? How does it live now?

Abstract:

Covid-19 paralyzoval na začiatku roku 2020 celý svet. Zákerná choroba, ktorá sa šíri vzduchom. Inkubačná doba 14 dní a možnosť bez príznakového priebehu spravila z každého človeka možného šíriteľa ale aj pacienta. V čase písania týchto riadkov má na svojom svedomí táto choroba 16 923 279 prípadov, z toho 664 193 smrteľných (ku dňu 29.7.2020). Krátko po vypuknutí pandémie vznikol konsenzus, že najlepší spôsob obrany proti chorobe je sa jej vyhnúť domácou karanténou a nosením rúšok. Krajiny, ktoré koketovali s možnosťou premorenia populácie sa často dostali do situácii na hrane zvládnutia ich zdravotným systémom. Slovensko zareagovalo rýchlo a bez zásadných protestov. Protestné hlasy sa ozývali skôr voči spôsobu riadenia štátu ako samotným fundamentálnym opatreniam: zostaň doma, nos rúško, umývaj si ruky. Bratislava sa tak rýchlo premenila na dystopický priestor, známy zo sci-fi filmov, vyprázdnených ulíc a iných verejných priestorov. Parkoviská, nákupné centrá sa stali miestom duchov. Ich tradiční užívatelia sa utiahli do bezpečia domovov. Život si cestu nájde. Rovnako sociálna interakcia či kultúra zažila rýchlu digitálnu transformáciu a ľudia začali hľadať ako niečo zažiť na diaľku. Hudobníci streamovali svoje koncerty a priatelia presunuli „pivo“ na konferenčné telefóny, ktoré doteraz poznali len z korporátnych mítingov. Štandardnú hygienu doplnila dezinfekcia a spoločný život „social distancing“. Miesto kde sa paranoja Covid-19 koncentrovala bola červená zóna nemocničného urgentného príjmu. Tu pristál každý pacient, ktorý potreboval byť ošetrený a mal príznaky Covid-19 (cestovateľská anamnéza, dýchavičnosť ...). Personál tak musel ku každému pacientovi pristupovať akoby bol nositeľom Covid-19. Ako druhé miesto ukazujúce beznádej a premenu prostredia do novej reality približujem Dom sociálnych služieb v Pezinku, v ktorom bol personál s klientami uväznený karanténou s potvrdeným Covid-19 a viac ako 15 úmrtiami nepretržite päť týždňov. Dokumentujem v ňom odoberanie vzoriek zástupcami Národného krízového štábu pre testy personálu a klientov. V práci pozorujem vyprázdnený verejný priestor a novú podobu života s Covid-19 okolo nás. Opustený priestor. Kto ho opustil? Ako žije teraz?
