Czech Cultural Council in Exile and Literary Life of Czech Exile 1948-1968

Abstract:

Autor se zabývá dosud opomíjenou (nedoceněnou) kapitolou dějin české poválečné literatury. Ústředním tématem jeho práce je úsilí redaktorů a nakladatelů Antonína a Roberta Vlachových, kteří se v nesnadných podmínkách pokoušeli pod hlavičkou České kulturní rady organizovat literární život českých exulantů v letech 1948-1968. Téměř obrozenecké úsilí pozapomenutých osobností autor líčí v souvislostech nejen literárních, ale i politických dějin našeho exilu. Vedle České kulturní rady sleduje také způsob, jakým se na formování literárního života první protikomunistické emigrační vlny podílela Svobodná Evropa, Křesťanská akademie a Společnost pro vědy a umění, všímá si dějin nakladatelského podnikání v exilu (Sklizeň svobodné tvorby, Universum Press) a zvláštní pozornost věnuje tehdejším literárním a kulturním časopisům (Sklizeň, Perspektivy, Proměny). Informativně pojednává též o soudobé tvorbě prozaické, básnické a dramatické.

Abstract:

The work deals with a chapter in the history of Czech literature that still remains out of the attention of Czech literary critics and historians. It is focused on the personalities and work of Antonin and Robert Vlach, editors and publishers, who – notwithstanding difficult conditions – founded the Czech Cultural Council in Exile and attempted to organize literary life of the Czech exiles between 1948 and 1968. Almost revivalist efforts of the half-forgotten figures of Czech literature are depicted not just in the context of literary but also of political history of Czech exile. Apart from the Czech Cultural Council, the work tries to show the role the RFE, Christian Academy and the Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences played in the process of forming literary life of the first wave of anti-communist emigration, comments on the history of publishing business in exile (Sklizeň svobodné tvorby, Universum Press) and special attention pays to contemporary literary and cultural journals (Sklizeň, Perspektivy, Proměny). It also offers brief information on the prosaic, poetic and dramatic works of the period.
