Free Speech in the Context of Liberal Democracy

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá genealogií filosofického ospravedlnění svobody projevu během posledních několika staletí. Autor sleduje zejména liberálními teoretiky, kteří vyzdvihují významnost svobodného projevu z různých důvodů. Nalezneme zde argumenty spojené s hledáním pravdy, sebenaplněním jednotlivce, funkčností liberální demokracie a mnohé další. Práce přináší i kritický pohled na teorie obhajující svobodný projev, a to jak z tradice liberální, tak neliberální. Argumenty ospravedlňující i kritizující svobodný projev jsou následně analyzovány ve vztahu k důležitým liberálním principům a pojmům, čímž se odkrývají liberální východiska jednotlivých autorů, kteří spolu o výklad svobody projevu soupeří.

Abstract:

This thesis concerns the genealogy of the philosophical justification of freedom of expression over the past several centuries. The author examines primarily liberal theorists, who stress the importance of free expression for various reasons. We find arguments related to the search for truth, the self-fulfillment of the individual, the functioning of liberal democracy and many others. The work brings a critical view to theories that defend freedom of expression, both from liberal and non-liberal traditions. Arguments justifying and criticizing freedom of expression are then analyzed in their relation to important liberal principles and concepts, through which the work uncovers the liberal basis of the individual authors who compete to explain the concept of freedom of expression.
