Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je analyzovat chování Margaret Hale, hlavní hrdinky románu Sever a jih od Elizabeth Gaskell. Přesněji řečeno se tato práce zabývá Margaretinými častými přestupky společenských pravidel Anglie devatenáctého století, a zda je příčinou tohoto chování vzpoura proti společnosti nebo spíše Margaretina odvaha porušit některá pravidla za účelem dosažení vyššího dobra. Teoretická část práce, která je rozdělená do tří podkapitol – Vdaná žena, Stará panna a Padlá žena, se zabývá postavením žen v devatenáctém století. Tato část poskytuje teoretický základ pro analýzu Margaretiných přestupků a jejich příčin v analytické části skládající se ze čtyř kapitol – Dcera, Manželství, Padlá žena a Přizpůsobení se.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to analyse behaviour of Margaret Hale, the main female character from Elizabeth Gaskell’s novel North and South. More precisely, it is Margaret’s frequent transgression of social dictate of the nineteenth-century England that is being examined, and whether the reason for such conduct is solely a rebellion against society or rather Margaret’s bravery to cross the rules in order to pursuit greater good. The theoretical part of the thesis, which is divided into three chapters – Married Woman, Spinster, and Fallen Woman, concentrates on the position of women in the nineteenth century. This part provides theoretical background for the analysis of Margaret’s misdemeanours and their causes in the analytical part consisting of four chapters – Daughter, Marriage, Fallen Woman, and Adjustment.
