The concept of civil religion

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá popisem a analýzou vývoje konceptu občanského náboženství. V první části je stručně zmíněno místo daného konceptu v rámci sekularizační teorie a popsány jeho historicko-teoretické kořeny (Rousseau, Tocqueville, Durkheim). Druhá část se zaměřuje na pojetí konceptu v podání Roberta N. Bellaha, kde je zároveň poukázáno na problém dvojí podoby občanského náboženství v americkém prostředí. Třetí část pojednává o dvojí tradici ve zkoumání občanského náboženství – rousseauovské a durkheimovské - a navazuje popisem aplikace konceptu v jednotlivých komparativních analýzách. Hlavní problém konceptu občanského náboženství, se kterým se potýká od své prvotní formulace, představuje jeho nejednoznačné teoretické vymezení. Tato nejednoznačnost je zapříčiněná převládající dvojí tradicí konceptu, která pojímá občanské náboženství buď jako spontánní kulturní fenomén, nebo jako uměle zkonstruovanou ideologii, a zároveň značnou provázaností konceptu s americkým prostředím. Ukazuje se, že jedinou životaschopnou možností je pojímání konceptu občanského náboženství jako ideálního typu, který bude reflektovat obě tyto tradice. K celkovému dokreslení jsou nastíněny i budoucí perspektivy vývoje tohoto konceptu.

Abstract:

This work is focused on the description and analysis of the evolution of the concept of civil religion. The first part briefly mentions the inclusion of the concept to the frame of theory of secularization and describes its historical and theoretical roots (Rousseau, Tocqueville, Durkheim). The second part outlines how this conception has been understood in the work of Robert N. Bellaha and is although trying to explain the problem of dual form of civil religion in american society. The third part is focused on dual tradition in the understanding of civil religion – based on Durkheim and Rousseau – and description of the application of the concept of civil religion in the comparative analyses. The main problem of the concept of civil religion is its ambiguous theoretical definition. This ambiguity is caused by the previling concept of dual tradition, which comprehends it either as spontaneous cultural phenomenon or artificially created ideology. It seems that the only viable option of aplication of the concept of civil religion is to interpret it as an ideal type which will reflect both these traditions. For the complexity of the description of the concept there are outlined some possible prospects of future development.
