Conspiration theories and motivations of their distributers

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se věnuje fenoménu konspirační teorie a pojednává o motivech aktérů šířících tyto teorie na internetu, jakož i o jejich vnímání světa. Nejprve se v práci snažím teoreticky vymezit možné motivy a vlivy šíření konspiračních teorií na základě prací současných autorů a teoretiků a v další části práce pak analyzuji technikou tématické analýzy polo-strukturované rozhovory s aktivními šiřiteli konspiračních teorií na internetu. Z analýzy vyplývá, že hlavními faktory ovlivňujícími jednání zkoumané skupiny jsou jak pozitivní tak i negativní pohnutky. Mezi nalezená negativní vnímání světa aktérů patří zvyšující se dozor, pocit bezmoci, nedůvěry ve stávající systém a nespokojenost s poskytovanými informacemi v médiích. Jako pozitivně vnímané faktory ovlivňující šíření konspiračních teorií byly analyticky nalezeny: vnitřní uspokojení, pocit vyplnění vlastního poslání a příležitost k seznámení. Analýza rovněž ukázala vliv činnosti konspiračních teoretiků na jejich vnímání budoucnosti, kde díky šíření této tématiky je aktuálně negativně vnímaný svět do budoucna spatřován pozitivně s nadějí na změnu.

Abstract:

This Diploma Thesis deals with the phenomenon of conspiracy theories and discusses the motives of actors spreading these theories on the Internet as well as their perception of the world. First, in my work, I try to define the possible motives and influences of the spread of conspiracy theories on the work of contemporary authors and theorists and in the next section I analyse through the technique of thematic analysis semistructured interviews of active actors spreading conspiracy theories on the Internet. The analysis shows that the main factors influencing the studied group are both positive and negative incentives. The negative perception of the world affecting studied group's actions are: the perception of surveillance, powerlessness, distrust in the existing system and dissatisfaction with the information presented in the media. Factors perceived as positive affecting the spread of conspiracy theories have been found analytically as follows: inner satisfaction, a good feelig of completing their own mission and the opportunity to find similar individuals. Analysis also showed the impact of the conspiracy theorists on their perception of the future. Thanks to the spreading of the information about currently negatively perceived world the future is seen with the hope for positive change.
