The significance of enlarged pronotum for swimming in groundhoppers (Orthoptera: Tetrigidae)

Abstract:

V teoretické části této práce je zpracována rešerše specializovaná na akvatické chování hmyzu se zaměřením na rovnokřídlý hmyz, zejména čeleď Tetrigidae. Experimentální část je věnována akvatickému chování marší rodu Tetrix. Ve vodě těmto marším zůstává pod prodlouţeným štítem bublinka vzduchu a cílem práce bylo zjistit význam této bublinky při plavání. Experimentálně byla některým jedincům bublinka odstraněna (odsáta) a vizuálně bylo hodnoceno chování s bublinkou a bez ní. Experimenty byly prováděny na třech druzích s odlišnými biotopovými preferencemi (Tetrix subulata, Tetrix tenuicornis a Tetrix bipunctata). Celkem bylo pozorováno a vyhodnoceno akvatické chování 235 adultních jedinců, z toho 110 odsátou bublinkou a 125 s neodsátou bublinkou. U všech zkoumaných druhů byl prokázán vliv přítomnosti bublinky na schopnost vynoření z vody, přičemţ jedinci s odsátou bublinkou se nebyli schopni vynořit. Bublinka pod štítem má tedy význam pro plavání marší a schopnost jejich vynoření zpod vodní hladiny.

Abstract:

A literature review dealing with the the aquatic behavior in insects, especially in Orthoptera and family Tetrigidae, has been compiled. The experimental part of the bachelor thesis is focused on the aquatic behavior in groundhoppers of genus Tetrix. These groundhoppers are terrestrial insects, but because they are living on banks, they are frequently jumping to the water if they are disturbed. When they get into the water, the air bubble staing under the extended pronotum and the groundhoppers are able to actively swimm. The aim of the work was to determine the importance of this bubble during the swimming. The bubble was experimentally removed from part of individuals, and the behavior with and without the bubble was compared and visually evaluated. Experiments have been performed on three species with different habitat preferences (Tetrix subulata, Tetrix tenuicornis and Tetrix bipunctata). Altogether, the behaviour of 110 specimens with aspirated bubble and 125 specimens with bubble under the pronotum have been compared. As result, the importance of the bubble for the ability of swimming was demonstrated in the all examined specimens, while the individuals with aspirated bubble were not able to leave the water. The bubble under the enlarged pronotum is important for swimming and the ability to emerge from the water.
