Bambusuril Derivatives: Synthesis and Supramolecular Properties

Abstract:

Tato disertační práce se věnuje přípravě a supramolekulární chemii aniontových receptorů, především pak bambus[6]urilů. Bambusurily, příbuzné hostitelské molekuly a také další receptory aniontů jsou představeny v teoretické části. Čtyři studie představeny v této tezi se zabývají přípravou a studiem supramolekulárních vlastností bambusurilových aniontových receptorů. Tyto studie byly publikovány jako čtyři separátní články v recenzovaných časopisech. První publikace se věnuje vzniku bambusurilových komplexů s organickými anionty v chloroformu. Jak bylo zjištěno, tyto anionty tvoří komplexy s bambusurilem o stechiometrii 2:1. Struktura komplexu je navíc stabilizována interakcí s molekulou vody, která se nachází v dutině makrocyklu. Toto pozorování bylo podrobněji studováno, protože většina aniontů vytváří s bambusurily komplexy se stechiometrií 1:1 bez stabilizace rozpouštědlem. V druhé části jsou diskutovány zajímavé aniontové vazebné schopnosti bambusurilového derivátu ve vodě. Bambusurilové deriváty byly později použity pro detekci příslušných aniontových komplexů ve vodě a vodných roztocích pomocí 1H NMR spektroskopie. Jodid a chloristan mohou být detekovány až v submikromolárních koncentracích v čisté vodě pomocí tohoto postupu. Čtvrtá publikace posuzuje schopnost benzylového bambusurilu vázat anionty v chloroformu a popisuje použití tohoto makrocyklu pro detekci aniontů v tomto rozpouštědle. V poslední části této práce je představena příprava a supramolekulární studie nových karboxyalkyl bambusurilových derivátů. Tyto makrocykly byly použity pro lepší pochopení vlivu negativních substituentů na vázání aniontů bambusurily.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the preparation and supramolecular chemistry of anion receptors, namely bambus[6]urils. Bambusurils and related host molecules as well as other anion receptors are introduced in the theoretical part. Four studies presented in this thesis deals with the preparation and supramolecular studies of bambusuril anion receptors. They were already published as four separate papers in impacted journals. The first publication focuses on the formation of bambusuril complexes with organic anions in chloroform. As was found out, these anions form complexes with bambusuril of a 2:1 stoichiometry. The structure of complex is further stabilized by interaction with water molecule present in the macrocycle cavity. This observation was further investigated, as majority of anions form complexes with bambusurils of a 1:1 stoichiometry with no stabilizing solvent interaction. In the second part, interesting anion binding properties of bambusuril derivative in water are discussed. Bambusuril derivatives were later used as platforms for the detection of corresponding anion complexes in water and aqueous solutions by 1H NMR spectroscopy. Up to submicromolar concentration of iodide and perchlorate can be detected in pure water by this approach. The fourth publication evaluates ability of bambusuril bearing benzyl groups to bind anion in chloroform and describes use of this macrocycle for anion detection in this solvent. In the last part of this work the preparation and supramolecular study of new carboxyalkyl bambusuril derivatives is presented. These macrocycles were used to better understand the effect of negatively charged substituents on the binding of anions by bambusurils.
