Geographical analysis of the spread of HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce je zaměřena na geografickou analýzu šířeni HIV/AIDS v Karibiku. Je zde kladen důraz na přiblížení situace viru lidské imunodeficience (HIV) a syndromu získaného selhání imunity (AIDS) v regionu, který je druhým nejvíce zasaženým na světě po subsaharské Africe. Práce vypovídá o časoprostorovém šíření této nemoci, zejména v letech 2003-2013, v Karibiku a snaží se tak přiblížit karibskou epidemii již od počátku jejího vzniku v tomto regionu až do současnosti. Obecnější začátek je doplněn o trojúhelník humánní ekologie, který čtenáři pomůže vysvětlit faktory ovlivňující HIV/AIDS v regionu. Je zde podrobněji vysvětlena situace v celém Karibiku, možnosti prevence i léčby. Z hlediska šíření nemoci je dále analyzován každý stát samostatně. Posledním cílem této práce je případová studie ostrova Hispaniola a jeho podrobná geografická analýza. Vzhledem k tomu, že Karibik je regionem, který doposud v česky psaných zdrojích nebyl na toto téma kompletně zpracován, přinese tato práce užitečná data a výsledky ať už pro potřeby výuky na místní univerzitě, tak i pro širší veřejnost. Práce může doplnit již podrobně analyzované regiony a přispět k ucelení informací o epidemii HIV/AIDS po celém světě.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis is focused on geographical analysis of HIV/AIDS spreading in the Caribbean. The emphasis is put on giving insight into situation of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) in the region that is the second mostly affected place in the world after sub-Saharan Africa. The thesis describes spatial spreading in 2003-2013 of this disease in the Caribbean and outlines the Caribbean epidemic since the beginning of its origin in this region up to the present. General introduction is completed with the triangle of human ecology. The triangle helps readers to explain factors which have an influence on HIV/AIDS in the region. Situation in the whole Caribbean, possibilities of prevention and medical treatment are explained here. From the point of view of the disease spreading each state is analyzed separately. The last aim of this thesis is a case study of the Hispaniola island and its detailed geographical analysis. Since the Caribbean is a region that has never been thoroughly described from the point of view of this topic in Czech written sources, this thesis will bring useful data and results that can be used both for the education at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen and for the general public. The thesis can contribute to completing detail analysis of the Caribbean region in terms of HIV/AIDS epidemic. It can also help to complete the information about HIV/AIDS epidemic in the whole world.
