Predictors of anxiety and depression symptoms in psychology students during the covid-19 pandemic

Abstract:

Tato bakalářkská práce se zaobírá duševním zdravím v kontextu pandemie covidu-19. Dle dosavadního výzkumu má pandemie covidu-19 výrazné negativní dopady na duševní zdraví, a to zejména u vysokoškoláků. Hlavním cílem této bakalářské práce je zjistit, jaké charakteristiky studentů psychologie souvisí s u nich zjištěnou mírou deprese a úzkosti. Úvodem jsou pojednány deprese, úzkost, souvislosti pandemie covidu-19 a dosavadní pandemický výzkum deprese a úzkosti, ze kterého tato práce výrazně čerpá. Praktická část práce se zaměřuje na 13 sociodemografických a zdravotních faktorů a jejich souvislost s depresí a úzkostí. Použitými nástroji jsou Beckova sebeposuzovací škála depresvity pro dospělé (BDI-II), Beckův inventář úzkosti (BAI) a škála úzkosti z koronaviru (CAS), která byla přeložena do češtiny v rámci této práce. Všechny škály byly administrovány skrze online dotazník. Výzkumný soubor se sestává z 234 studentů psychologie studujících na českých vysokých školách (MUNI, CUNI, UPOL, OU). Alespoň mírné příznaky deprese byly zjištěny u 40,2 % (n = 94) studentů, úzkosti u 56,8 % (n = 130) studentů. Mnohonásobnou lineární regresí byla zjištěna souvislost mezi 8 faktory a depresí (úzkost z koronaviru, frekvence pohybových aktivit, čas věnovaný koníčkům, věk, spolubydlení, přítomnost těžké formy covidu-19 u blízkého člověka, bydliště (město/vesnice), míra sociálního kontaktu) a mezi 4 faktory a úzkostí (úzkost z koronaviru, věk, pohlaví, finanční situace). Výsledky tohoto výzkumu mohou pomoci identifikovat studenty, u nichž je v průběhu pandemie vyšší riziko potíží s depresí a úzkostí.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on mental health in the context of the covid-19 pandemic. As can be understood from the current state of literature, the covid-19 pandemic has profound negative impacts on mental healh, especially in university students. The main goal of this thesis is to explore which characteristics of psychology students are associated with their depression and anxiety levels. In the beginning of the thesis, depression, anxiety and the covid-19 pandemic are discussed, followed by an overview of existing research concerning the factors associated with depression and anxiety during the pandemic. The practical part of this tesis focuses on 13 sociodemographic and health-related factors and their association with depression and anxiety. Instruments used in this thesis are the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II), the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and the Coronavirus Anxiety Scale (CAS), that was translated into the Czech language as part of this thesis. The research sample consists of 234 psychology students studying at a Czech university (MUNI, CUNI, UPOL, OU). Mild symptoms of depression were present in 40,2% (n = 94) of students, whereas mild symptoms of anxiety in 56,8% (n = 140). A multiple regression analysis identified 8 factors associated with depression levels (coronavirus anxiety, frequency of exercise, time spent with hobbies, age, living alone/with others, severe case of covid-19 among friends or relatives, place of residence (urban/rural), social contact frequency) and 4 factors associated with anxiety levels (coronavirus anxiety, age, gender, financial situation). The results of this thesis may help to identify students who are at risk of depression and anxiety during the pandemic.
