Private security companies as a tool for ensuring security of weak states?

Abstract:

Diplomová práce analyzuje působení soukromých bezpečnostních společností ve slabých státech a klade si za cíl zjistit, zda soukromé bezpečnostní společnosti pozitivně ovlivňují bezpečnost těchto států. První kapitola zasazuje fenomén soukromých bezpečnostních společností do teoretického rámce, vysvětluje proces privatizace bezpečnosti, v jehož důsledku soukromé bezpečnostní společnosti vznikly, a zachycuje možné způsoby jejich klasifikace a regulace. V druhé kapitole je provedena analýza činnosti soukromého bezpečnostního sektoru ve třech slabých státech -- Sieře Leone, Iráku a Keni. Třetí kapitola využívá výsledků analýz z druhé kapitoly k potvrzení, resp. vyvrácení platnosti pěti hypotéz o vlivu soukromých bezpečnostních společností na bezpečnost slabých států, jež jsou stanoveny v metodologické části práce.

Abstract:

The thesis examines various activities of private security companies in weak states. The research question is whether private security companies have a positive impact on the level of security and stability of weak states. The first chapter provides the theoretical framework; it explains the process of security privatization, which resulted in emergence of private security companies; it offers possible means of classification and regulation of private security companies. The second chapter consists of analyses of role private security sector played in stabilization of three weak states -- Sierra Leone, Iraq and Kenya. The third chapter uses results of the analyses from the previous chapter to either confirm or refute hypotheses concerning the impact of private security companies on security of weak states, which are set in the methodological part of the thesis.
