Odontochronology: Developmental stress in dental remains of Celtic children in Moravia (Rousinov & Kralice na Hane, 400-150 BCE)

Abstract:

Práce si klade za cíl posoudit stres v raném dětství u keltských dětí z archeologických nalezišť Rousínov a Kralice na Hané (400-150 př. n. l.) pomocí odontochronologické analýzy. K hodnocení bylo vybráno celkem devět zubů od osmi jedinců. Bylo připraveno a analyzováno šestnáct výbrusů pomocí polarizované světelné mikroskopie. Každý analyzovaný zub vykazoval významný počet akcentovaných linií, což jsou indikátory fyziologických stresových událostí během raného dětství. Rekonstrukcí chronologie vývoje zubů tato studie přispívá k hlubšímu porozumění životním podmínkám a zdravotním výzvám, kterým čelily keltské děti na Moravě v daném období. Tato bakalářská práce je součástí širšího kolaborativního archeo-antropologického projektu zaměřeného na keltskou populaci na Moravě na Katedře antropologie Masarykovy univerzity v rámci víceoborového zaměření na zubní antropologii.

Abstract:

This thesis aims to assess early childhood stress in Celtic children from the archaeological sites of Rousínov and Kralice na Hané (400-150 BCE) using odontochronological analysis. A total of nine teeth from eight individuals were selected for this study. Sixteen thin sections were prepared and analysed using polarised light microscopy. Each analysed tooth exhibited a significant number of accentuated lines, which are indicative of physiological stress events during early childhood. By reconstructing the chronology of dental development this study contributes to a deeper understanding of the living conditions and health challenges faced by Celtic children in Moravia during the specified period. This bachelor’s thesis is part of a broader collaborative archaeo-anthropological project centred on the Celtic population in Moravia at the Department of Anthropology at Masaryk University within a multiapproach focusing on dental anthropology.
