The Development of the Role of Women in Dystopian Literature

Abstract:

Záměrem této práce je porovnat čtyři významná díla dystopické literatury, konkrétně 1984 od George Orwella, sérii Labyrint od Jamese Dashnera, Příběh Služebnice od Margaret Atwood a sérii Divergence od Veronicy Roth, v konceptu reprezentace a rolí ženských postav v každé z těchto prací. Tato díla jsou analyzována odděleně v jednotlivých kapitolách ve stejném pořadí, v jakém jsou uvedena výše. Tato práce analyzuje nejvýznamnější ženské postavy v každém z těchto beletristických děl a pokouší se najít odpovědi na několik otázek, například zda má ženská postava v příběhu své opodstatnění, jestli je relevantní pro příběh, zda je, či není definována mužskými postavami nebo zda pomáhá zachovávat patriarchální ideály, či se proti nim vzpírá. Po pokusu zodpovědět všechny tyto otázky pro každé z jednotlivých děl jsou tato díla porovnávána s cílem definovat a vyjasnit způsob, jakým se ženské postavy v dystopické beletrii vyvíjely v dílech psaných mužskými a ženskými autory. Hlavním argumentem je, že i přes úspěchy dosažené feministickým hnutím za poslední století, stopy patriarchální ideologie jsou v ženském prožívání stále přítomné. V závěru tyto analýzy nabízejí vyhodnocení současných trendů v dystopické literatuře a ideologie, kterou prosazuje v první polovině 21. století. Tato práce taktéž nabízí náhled do vztahu mezi feministickým hnutím a patriarchální ideologií v současné literatuře.

Abstract:

The aim of this work is to compare four significant works of dystopian literature, specifically 1984 by George Orwell, The Maze Runner series by James Dashner, The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood, and the Divergent series by Veronica Roth, in terms of the representation and role of female characters in each of these works. These works are analyzed separately in individual chapters in the same order as listed above. This thesis analyses the most significant female character(s) in each of these works of fiction in an attempt to answer a number of questions, such as whether the female character serves her own purpose, whether she is relevant to the plot, whether or not she is defined by the male characters, or whether she perpetuates patriarchal ideals or defies them. After attempting to answer these questions for each of the individual works, these works are compared and contrasted in order to define and clarify the way in which the female character in dystopian fiction evolved in works written by male and female writers. The main argument is that despite the accomplishments achieved by the feminist movement in the last century, traces of patriarchal ideology are still present in women’s experience. These analyses conclude with an assessment of current trends in dystopian literature and the ideologies it is promoting in the first half of the 21st century. The thesis also offers an insight into the relationship between the feminist movement and patriarchal ideology in contemporary literature.
