Attentional control as a predictor of problematic social networking sites use

Abstract:

Excessive social networking sites use can lead to problematic social networking sites use (problematic SNS use) and that has negative consequences in personal, occupational, or academic human lives and their health. There are data that problematic SNS use is predicted by social anxiety and procrastination, but it is unknown what role attentional control plays in this relationship, there is only evidence that attentional control is associated with procrastination. The data about social anxiety, procrastination, attentional control, problematic SNS use and social networking sites use were collected from 224 Czech and Slovak respondents aged 16 to 54. The results show that social anxiety, procrastination, and attentional control is associated with problematic SNS use, with the strongest association between attentional control and problematic SNS use and with the weakest association between social anxiety and problematic SNS use. The strongest positive correlation was found between procrastination and attentional control. The regression analysis showed that problematic SNS use is significantly predicted by attentional control and procrastination, but social anxiety is not significant predictor of problematic SNS use. These findings are in contrast with contemporary knowledge that social anxiety plays a key role as a predictor of problematic SNS use.

Abstract:

Nadmerné používanie sociálnych sietí môže viesť k problematickému používaniu sociálnych sietí (PPSS), ktoré má negatívny dopad na osobný, pracovný či akademický život jedincov a na ich zdravie. Existujú údaje, že PPSS predikuje sociálna úzkosť a prokrastinácia, no neexistujú poznatky o tom, akú rolu hrá v predikcii PPSS kontrola pozornosti, ktorá súvisí s prokrastináciou. Prostredníctvom dotazníka boli nazbierané dáta o sociálnej úzkosti, prokrastinácii, kontrole pozornosti, PPSS a o používaní sociálnych sietí u 224 česko-slovenských respondentov vo veku 16 až 54 rokov. Výsledky podporujú hypotézu o súvislosti medzi sociálnou úzkosťou, prokrastináciou i kontrolou pozornosti a PPSS, s najsilnejším vzťahom medzi kontrolou pozornosti a PPSS a najslabším vzťahom medzi sociálnou úzkosťou a PPSS. Najsilnejšia pozitívna korelácia bola medzi prokrastináciou a kontrolou pozornosti. Regresná analýza ukázala, že PPSS významne predikuje kontrola pozornosti i prokrastinácia, no nie sociálna úzkosť. To je v kontraste s doterajšími poznatkami, ktoré pripisujú sociálnej úzkosti dôležitú úlohu v predikovaní PPSS.
