Syria as the Heart of Islamic and Arabic Culture

Abstract:

Sýrie se v uplynulých letech dostala na umělecké výsluní arabského světa; plnila přední stránky jeho novin, časopisů, často se objevovala ve sdělovacích prostředcích. Díky kulturnímu zázemí, které poskytla mnoha souborům z celého světa i domácím umělcům vystupujícím nejen na divadelních prknech, podiích, ale i v samotných ulicích hlavního města Damašku, vstoupila do povědomí veřejnosti jako země žijící arabskou a islámskou kulturou. Damašek, hlavní město Syrské arabské republiky, byl prohlášen Hlavním městem arabské kultury pro rok 2008, již o dva roky dříve bylo Hlavním městem islámské kultury jmenováno druhé největší syrské město Aleppo. Jak tyto kulturní svátky v obou případech prožívala samotná Sýrie? Zaznamenala zvýšený turistický zájem návštěvníků z Evropy, Asie, Afriky? Jednalo se pouze o čistě islámsky a orientálně zaměřený program nebo přehlídku umělecké pestrosti celého světa? Je možno označit Sýrii jako kolébku tradiční kultury, která ovlivnila pozdější vývoj regionu? Oslovila propagace vybraných metropolí jako Hlavních měst islámské a arabské kultury Evropu a její státy? Jedná se o pouhou myšlenku sbližování arabských zemí, muslimských národů nebo setkání Orientu, Evropy a dalších regionů? Je možné nalézt, pojmenovat a jasně určit přínos tohoto setkání? Zajímá se svět o islám, kulturní život Arabů, muslimských společností, arabských zemí obecně? Jak lze hodnotit kulturní přínos Aleppa a Damašku v roli hostitelských měst islámské potažmo arabské kultury v roce 2006 a 2008? Nejen na tyto otázky bych chtěla ve své diplomové práci nalézt odpověď. Mým cílem je čtenáři přiblížit a především analyzovat tento každoroční kulturní svátek pro celý arabský svět, muslimy, ale i křesťany, Evropu a další regiony; také shrnout specifika Sýrie coby hostitelské země islámské kultury v roce 2006 a znovu o dva roky později, kdy byla jmenována centrem kultury arabské pro rok 2008; dále také uvést důvody, které vedly ke skutečnosti, že byla tato země dvakrát po sobě v krátkém časovém úseku vybrána jako pořadatel dvou velkých výše zmíněných svátků.

Abstract:

"Syria as the Heart of Islamic and Arabic Culture" is divided into eleven chapters talking about seemingly different topics. However, these topics are strongly connected, because they trace the development of culture in Syria. My work starts by demonstrating today´s Syrian Arab Republic not only as an important player in the Middle East region, but also as a local superpower because of its rich culture life especially focusing on the institution of the Islamic Capital of Culture and the Arab Capital of Culture ? Syrian Arab Republic has represented both of them not so long time ago. My work starts with demonstrating the historical background of both Syrian cities which represented Islamic Culture in 2006 (Aleppo) and Arabic Culture in 2008 (Damascus). My paper also explains in detail the meaning of present Islamic and Arabic Culture, talks about the uprising of the Syrian Arab Republic as the cultural life "queen" of the Islamic and Arabic world in the 21st century. Moreover, this paper attempts to present a detailed study of the special occasion of Aleppo´s and Damascus´s presidency of the Islamic Capital of Culture and the Arab Capital of Culture. The paper also tries to answer the basic questions whether there really exists the "Clash of Civilizations" or not. That is why I compare the cultural events held in Aleppo in 2006 and in Damascus in 2008 to the "Syrian reality" presented in a wrong way by the western media, but also by the officials of European and American policy. Both of them influence the negative public opinion about Arabs which is in general quite common in the West. Despite this fact I come in the end to the conclusion that the "East" (Islamic and Arab world) is deeply interested in successful dialogue with its western partner on the opposite side and does all the possible to make it closer not farer because it (strongly connected to the Islamic and Arabic culture) believes in peace and the way of cultural diplomacy. This can be clearly seen in the institution of the Islamic Capital of Culture and the Arab Capital of Culture I finally agree with the opininion of some authors that "Clash of Civilizations" is a myth not a reality and Syrian Arab Republic is not an enemy of the "West" but a state with a long history, rich culture and a ready partner for a dialogue with another civilization.
