The usability of the Arduino platform for smart homes in theory and practice

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá teorií a praxí využití platformy Arduino pro model chytrého domu. Koncept chytrého domu (Smart Home) představuje spojení hardwaru a softwaru pro zlepšení pobytu uživatele v domě. Platforma Arduino je fyzické výpočetní zařízení, z kterého se skládá deska se vstupy a výstupy a vývojové prostředí. Teoretickými cíli práce byly představení oblasti "chytrý dům" (Smart Home), představení platformy Arduino a průzkum využití platformy Arduino pro koncepci chytrý dům (současný stav a perspektivy). Ty byly řešeny rešerší související literatury. Praktickými cíli práce byly návrh a realizace vlastního systému pro chytrý dům a vyhodnocení a závěry. V praktické části tak byl vypracován návrh, který byl následně realizován s využitím 3D tisku a dalších elektronických komponent. Výsledky ukazují, že mikropočítač Arduino je schopen v chytrý dům ovládat. V závěru práce je nejprve vyhodnocena realizace samotného projektu, která uvádí úspěšné provedení všech navržených funkcionalit, poté i její časové a finanční náklady. Poté je také vyhodnocena práce s platformou Arduino a jsou uvedeny oblasti, v kterých by se mohla platforma zlepšit pro její další využití.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis is focused on the usability of the Arduino platform for smart homes in theory and practice. The concept of Smart Homes represents a practical connection of hardware and software for people at home. The Arduino platform is a physical computing device consisting of a base board with input and output pins, as well as an Integrated Development Environment. The theory covered in this thesis describes an introduction to Smart Homes, presentation of the Arduino platform and research of usability of Arduino in the concept of Smart Homes (current state and future development). These questions were addressed by researching related literature. The practical goals were the design and implementation of a custom system for a Smart Home, and the evaluation of gained practical experience and conclusions from the gathered data. A design was developed, which was then realized using 3D printing and various electronic components and modules. The results show that the Arduino microcomputer is able to control a Smart Home. At the end of the thesis, the execution of the project itself is evaluated which states the successful implementation of all proposed functionalities. Also, its time and financial costs are carefully evaluated, as is the work with the Arduino platform, and the areas in which the platform could be improved for further use are listed.
